Kinja'd!!!

Just passed my HAM radio technician exam, currently practicing for my Part 107 FAA exam, then onto the GRE.

The GRE wont be as fun, thats why its last.

Last year was map projections and navigation

I really get a kick out of learning this stuff, I wish there was a way to turn that into money.

Highly recommend getting a test prep book for the GRE. There are so many little tricks that make it so so so much easier, especially the math section. Basically every math problem should be done in a few seconds with some little trick that I guarantee you don’t remember from grade school. You could sit there and brute force each problem but you’d end up running out of time. Anyway, yea, get a test prep book, well worth the few bucks.

I have a few, and I’ve been looking through them, but i haven’t really gotten into them yet.

The GRE isn’t that bad. However, I took it back in ‘89, so it may be a very different test now. In fact, it was perhaps the first year you could take it on a computer. That was significantly better than the paper version, since you could finish and move on at your own pace.

Maps and projections: Before I studied music, I wanted to be a cartographer. I was fascinated by the old hand-drawn maps, and I had sone some drafting and surveying in HS. I would have been happy doing that as a career, though I may not have been as satisfied using computers. And I’d love to learn navigation, but the old way. Do they still teach pilots and ship navigators how to use a sextant? That’s what I’d like to learn.

Map projections and Navigation? Go into GIS if you want to make some money!

The GRE was a breeze. Get one of the electronic study guides. The most nerve-wracking part was the end of the test. “You still have time remaining. Would you like to review your questions?” “No.” “Really, you have lots of time left. Are you really sure you don’t want to go back and review your work?” “No.” “We are going to give you one last chance to check your work. If you say no, the test is over and you get what you get. Are you absolutely, positively certain that you are happy with your answers and don’t need to check your work.” This is when the self-doubt really kicked in.....

I have to say that I read your headline as “I’m learning to kick stuff now.” I wondered why you would need to learn to kick stuff.

The Navy dropped celestial navigation for years starting in the 90's but have recently taken it back up again as a backup in the even of an electronic attack. CELNAV is wacky stuff, and not terribly practical for anything but rough navigation but it has a few very practical bits to understanding navigation in general.

My Grandfather was digging ditches for Gilmore Oil Company in SoCal in the 20's. One Friday afternoon he was told to bring a message to Mr. Gilmore. When Grandpa entered his office, he found him complaining how the huge map on his wall of all the wells and pipelines was always out of date. Grandpa told him, “I know how to use a transit and I took drafting classes in high school. I could survey all the new lines and wells for you and draw them in on you map.”

Mr. Gilmore agreed that he should begin doing just that on Monday morning. Grandpa went straight to the library and checked out a book on how to use a transit, because he had never touched a one in his life.

He ended up working in the oil & gas industry for 70 years.

Unless things have changed in the last 14 years (which of course they may have), be sure to bone-up doing math by hand. That really threw me for a loop when I took the GRE in ‘03.

Which is sad, I was really good at math by hand in grade school, but those skills had very much atrophied.

Look at you, renaissance man!

Isn’t it always the way that stuff is more interesting when there’s nothing essential riding on it? You could totally monetize those skills, but you’d have to really commit to a career path

Good luck on the GRE! Have you applied to grad schools yet ?

Get some test prep software too. Might as well get used to taking practice tests the way you will have to take the real test.

You can get a sextant from Harbor Freight. It will be cheaply made and all of your measurements will be at least 10° off, but it will work!

My father in law recently got into HAM radio. Which is kinda funny, considering he’s about the least talkative person on the planet.

“I really get a kick out of learning this stuff, I wish there was a way to turn that into money.”

This is me. I almost hate how unspecialized I am because I get such a satisfaction out of being curious about how to do something I will read for hours on end and really figure something out. And then I work some job and it’s repetitive and I quit after a few months. Struggle of my life.

This reminded me of a story, though it’s not as awesome as yours.

Many years ago, I was playing a dance band gig on New Year’s Eve. A lady in the audience came up to the bandstand and said, “Do you know such-and-so-and-so song?” The bandleader said, “Yeah! Sure, we know that song. We’ll play it next.” The woman smiled and walked away, and the band leader turned to the band and said, “Does anybody know this song?” The guitar player said, “Yeah, I think it goes kind of plink-a-plink-a-plink ,” and the clarinet player said, “Yeah, sort of like toot-a-toot-a-toot .” Armed with only the bare bones of a recognizable song, the bandleader said, “Okay. Let’s go. Two flats.” We proceeded to play just enough of the song to be recognizable (I had no idea what to play), then went into 8-bar solos for the rest. The lady was happy, and we lived to play another day.

The GRE is a scam, definetly study. However, it is much better than the GMAT.

The GRE is basically a test to see if you can learn the stupid math that has never been usefull/continues to not be useful in my graduate program. Bizzare logic problems. All kinds of shit.
