Kinja'd!!!

Although boats are nothing but money pits, I would love a new Boston Whaler to replace my Dad’s old one. Plus, the fact that this one gets 5.1 nautical miles per gallon is waaaay better than the mileage of my dad’s boat.

What kind of boat would you buy?

I’ve been pining for a Hobie Adventure Island .

If I had a better place to sail, I’d bump that up to a Hobie Cat .

This, I’d have to go with a sailboat and Hobies are fun. There’s some appeal of going with something big enough to have a cabin, but you’re sacrificing a lot of what makes sailing fun when you start getting that big.

Maybe this winter I’ll do what I did with this one.. Buy CHEAP, fix, run for a season, sell for profit the next season. No time this summer for one, bought a house a few months ago and that eats most of my time. My father in law has two (2003 Sea Ray Sundancer 24' and a 1971 Mako 19' center console) so I’ll just go out with him this season.

The Chris Craft was an AWESOME boat. Didn’t want to sell it but couldn’t say no to that profit.

After seeing a friend struggle with her Boston Whaler throughout my high school years, I’ll never go near boat engines

Yes! I have limited experience on bigger sailboats, but they seem to be a lot more work, especially if you aren’t keeping them in a slip. Flying the hull on a cat is exhilarating.

Funny you mention that. The last Whaler had a 175 Johnson on the back. It was an 80s boat, so starting around... 2006? 2007? Our boat had starting issues. It refused to turn over, sometimes taking half an hour of cranking to get started, and we’d have to rush to make sure we were off and going in case it stalled (which is did all the time when trying to dock).

I miss that boat.

I prefer inboard motors because I’m familiar with them. I don’t really know my ass from my elbow with outboards, especially two strokes. When I was troubleshooting the motor in my Chris Craft, it was easy mode. It was a carb’d Chevy 305.

I think this was a Mercury. I remember her and our boat-knowledgable friend dealing with fueling issue maybe? I remember many frustrating weekend days puttering along the Connecticut River and nearby lakes, trying to do whatever it was we originally planned on.

My favorite boat is a Seadoo. Don’t have to live too near the water or rent a slip. Just get a trailer. And it can still pull skis or go for leisurely cruises.

I’ve really been wanting any 16', full or half console aluminum fishing boat. Just like I grew up in. Dad lives just down the road, and I can use his 20' boat, but hauling that big of a boat around all the time gets old. A little puddle jumper is all I need.

Whalers are great boats for mainly one thing, and that is resale value. They tend to pound and be very wet. Budget? Intended use? Size? Horsepower?

I have a 22 foot Tripp Angler with an inboard diesel which is used almost exclusively for fishing. It is perfect for that. It is, however, not perfect for cruising as it lacks creature comforts like seats. It also has a rather limited cruise speed of about 20 knots (where it burns about 4 gallons per hour). At idle it appears to not burn any fuel at all. You will likely never realize whatever advertised mpg’s they say you will since that figure is based on ideal conditions, light loads and light application of the throttle.

All of the new four stroke motors from the major manufacturers will be great, and many people choose power based on their proximity to service centers - if you live close to a Merc dealer, for instance, buy a Merc.

Any boat will be a compromise. Figure out what you want to use it for, primarily, and start from there.

Lastly, with any used boat, GET A SURVEY from a qualified marine surveyor so you aren’t surprised down the line.

When I used to work on the water we called sailboaters WAFI’s - Wind Assisted Fucking Idiots. That said, I used to have a 24' C&C that was an absolute blast in any kind of real wind.

1994 Nautique Paragon. They took their regular inboard ski boat (which I happen to think had great lines) and put mahogany on the decks and gunwales, a teak floor, amazing vinyl interior, and left the hull alone - all fiberglass - except for the awesome green gelcoat all the way down with a classic waterline stripe. I don’t know how many of these things they made, but I’m sure they’re all but unobtainable now. The only catch is they all had this terrible ignition system called “Pro-Tec” but by now, they’ve all be converted to a traditional EI or else the kit is $500. But LOOK AT THIS THING.

But in reality, I’m looking for a late 90's V-drive Nautique. Those are a dime a dozen compared to the Paragon, and somewhat more practical. I’ve got a 1989 Supra inboard right now. LOL @ miles per gallon. Inboards like this hover in the low single digits to the other way around pulling a wakeboarder with full ballast.

Also know as “Whistle Pissers.” Pull into the fuel dock on the sailboat, ask how much fuel costs * whistles at high cost of fuel and asks if they can use the head.

Rag Haulers.

I loved sailing. I love power boats more.
