Was a solid, exquisite, whiskey barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout... but find one I did. You will get no complaints from me.

What a surprise. By the way, if anyone finds themselves out in Kearney, NE, hit up Thunderhead Brewing.

Bottled or on tap? How much did it cost you? (Looks delish, BTW...)

Tap, don’t recall price for tap, but they have 750ml bottles of the stuff for $20/bottle (might have bought two).

When I was driving in yesterday I was like:

“what the fuck is that thing over on the horizon”

And then I got closer, and drove under it, and I’m still not sure what the heck that thing is.

It’s huge though.

In Omaha? Yes. No questions asked. Some of the best beer I’ve ever had can be found in Omaha. Hell, some of the best food I’ve ever had too.

I just didn’t get my hopes up that I’d find amazing beer in central rural NE.

(Then again, arguably the best brewery in Arizona is in Tombstone - yes that Tombstone.)

Hah, I’ve been to Kearney more times than I care to admit. And I’ve had that stout, it is pretty darn decent.

There’s a touristy museum about pioneers crossing the plains IIRC, and a gift shop in that thing.

It’s not really the kind of place that attracts a lot of visitors. But my grandma lives in Geneva, so we go to Kearney or Hastings for that big-city feel sometimes when we visit.

Though we usually just go to Strang for their one restaurant. It’s actually pretty good in the category of, “you wanted that deep-fried, right hon?”

Kearney has a population density of 2,400 people per square mile. that’s not “big” by any means, but it’s hardly rural.

There is a university here and there is a really neat downtown area. It’s not rural here, this is true. It’s just smaller than anywhere I’ve ever lived by A LOT (admittedly, I’ve only lived in cities).

Then again, I’ve really enjoyed staying in other smaller regions for work in the past. The midwest is always full of surprises.

It’s actually pretty cool. At the end you get to stand over the interstate where they have radar guns aimed at the traffic and you can see how much people are speeding.

Really? OK, I shall do my best to make time for it. That sounds entertaining. The weather here is pretty nice so far (it was raining and in the 50's back in AZ today).

If it has the LBC seal of approval, I’ll take that as a good sign. =)

It’s been probably 15 years since I was there last, so hopefully that part is still there. I’m about an hour away from Kearney.

Also this weather can go away. It shouldn’t be 90 in May. The 60s and 70s of the next few days more like it.

Actually, when I was at Thunderhead, I was chatting with some of the locals about cars, and they were comparing the best muscle cars of the 60's/70's to the Hellcat and Demon, so I’m starting to wonder if the petrol in folks veins is just a way of life here.

I had no idea that there so many oppo’s who knew the region. But we are a wide ranging diverse group, I mean, I’ve met a number of folks over the years, and we pretty much run the gamut.

Arizona born and raised. Heat ain’t nothing so long as it’s not too humid. =)

Heck, if I had any idea that folks were out this way I would have let people know ahead of time I was coming out. I’ve met a fair number of old oppo’s in my travels. Weren’t you up in MI / upper midwest? I know I haven’t been around much, but clearly I have missed a lot.

Kearney has the only 1/4 mile drag strip in the state, I believe, as well as a huge classic show every summer. My little town has a 2 mile road course. We enjoy our cars out here, when it’s nice enough to drive them.

Hopefully good things brought you back. I have tried to leave AZ a couple of times, but always return. Made it as far as Chicago, but AZ is where the vast majority of my family is, and Southern AZ has quite reasonable cost of living... so...

So, I might have time on Thursday to either visit the Archway or the Classic Car museum... Thoughts on which is more of the “must see”?

I finally made it to Sun Up (and tried an AMAZING wine barrel aged plum barleywine) the day I bought my FiST, which I bought at Camelback Ford, since they were down the street. I was delayed at Sky Harbor for hours and hours and hours, and finally called up an old friend (and former opponaut) who was in Phoenix for the week, asked him if he wanted to go car shopping. He said absolutely, and so he picked me up at the airport, we test drove some cars, and I drove home to Tucson.

BTW, you need to try to Tombstone’s beers, I can’t recommend them enough.

This place is essentially next door to the location I’m working at: http://www.ccckearney.com/

And it depends on how work goes as to whether I’ll have time to run over to one or both of them, my evenings are free, but my afternoons are all dependent on how much work there is to get done.

Whenever I travel for work I have a hard time convincing people that the state is more than Omaha, Lincoln, and farm land. It’s actually a fun place to live if you are willing to road trip a little to check out different parts every now and then.

I hope you keep on enjoying the visit.

The plum barley wine is my favorite beer. I’ll have to check out tombstone. Hit up Helio Basin next time you’re in Phoenix. The location is a bit weird, but their food is by far the best of any brewery I’ve been to.

I definitely will. I only head up for concerts generally, but I owe my friend more than a beer for his help with the car shopping, so next time he’s in town, I’ll be heading back up.

And that menu looks crazy.

Thanks for the tip.

while you’re in town check out their professional indoor football team, the Kearney Hawks!

Totally joking, I just like following their Facebook page for the drama involving the coaches mom and the local media that won’t cover the games.
