If you get the turbo, make sure the timing chain and vvti actuator have been replaced, along with tensioners and all those related parts. Also make sure the high pressure fuel pump is working properly, and lastly, turn it on and let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes. If smoke starts pouring out the rear the turbo is done.

This engine is basically identical to the Mazdaspeed 6/3, minus a turbo tuned for a slightly better low end.

Another think to look out for is a busted AWD transfer case.

EDIT: D’OH. I was thinking of the CX7. Ignore this rambling old fool.

Engines are mostly good, avoid the 3.5L in the first year and go for the later 3.7 for more power... Just make sure the water pump’s not leaking, its an engine-out job.

Transfer cases on early AWD models are known to explode, due to the non-serviceable fluid overheating and breaking down. Smells REALLY BAD when it happens. There’s an extended warranty for affected units, which I think is everything 2009 and older.

Rear wheel bearings fail, front brakes wear uneven (inner pad more so than outer), but that’s about it for common issues. Parts are expensive because “luxury” model.

Had a 2007 with a bunch of miles on it and it was a nice ride. Just became expensive when the warranty was up.

The ones were looking at are all 3.7

What of the rumors of transmission issues?

Pretty nice turd. I briefly sold Mazdas, these were pretty well liked by the guys at the dealership, especially the top-spec ones, but I thought they were kind of a weird size.

Weird size is my jam.

The only 6 speeds I’ve seen fail are those that people put the wrong fluid in... or the first couple years they used a version of it in the Mazda6.

I asked on here when I was looking, Takuro covered it below.

Well worth checking out. They had a cool looking interior, the top trim (Grand Touring?) had a two tone leather in some of them that I liked.

I can’t get over that styling. Not an attractive car IMO.

From what I understand it’s basically a Ford Edge.

Eh I’ve heard worse, it’s a nice reminder, instead of the car yelling at you because you opened the door while the key is in the ignition.

Honda’s bingbong bingbong is nice too.

Range rover, and touraeg. Would be way cooler, or a MDX, or get a cayenne S. Those are fun!

Looking at an MDX too, no to the RR or Touareg on account of their 5 seat status and their...Range rover and touareginess.

Yeah, yeah. But range rover lol, it’s my current dream car once I graduate, but have you not test driven an MDX yet? Cause those are nice and reliable.

Yeah, and I feel ya. Just sometimes it’s okay to spend a little more, knowing you’re gonna get a good value. Especially , with something you’re gonna have to live with for a while

My mom had one, I think it was a 2008. Despite her neglect of it I think it held up pretty well. I’d go with a newer one

I mean, its overpriced for the market. We’ll have to see how flexible they are. Its 90k and 22 grand. Im seeing the same cars and years with half the mileage for that price. But, this will gauge my wife’s interest in the car at the least. To be honest I have NO interest in buying from these guys. They have not made me happy.

Oh, damn. That’s sounds like when we bought my mom a Honda pilot, that dealership was screwy hated it, but yeah. You’ll find out what she likes eventually, you just gotta limit her choices. Because the more you consider, the longer it’ll just take.

Mazda tech here. Been kinja’d.

Timing cover leaks on 80% of them, and as takuro said it’s an internal water pump so do that too.

Transfer case is the other biggie, they’re warrantied up to 90k, I believe it’s unlimited timewise though.

Brake booster is similar, common failure but also warrantied to 90k I believe, if you’re really serious i can always check for you, I can look up a vin for you too and see warranty history.

Rear axle seals are another common issue, the diff on earlier ones had poor ventilation so they changed the breather design, no warranty extension for those though.

Brakes and suspension seem to last but we do get the occasional wheel bearing or tie rod end, it’s just a heavy car.

As fer recalls, passenger air bags are being replaced now and the lower control arms should have already been done, there should be a metal clip over the bottom of the knuckle where the ball joint goes if they’ve been done.

Only transmission failures I’ve really seen is when the transfer case grinds the output shaft splines away, doesn’t happen often.

Any other questions just ask! Big mazda guy and been a tech for a year or so so pretty familiar with them, happy to help!

Honestly, this isn’t a bad idea at all.

I’d find a letter model with the refresh. Couple friends mothers had them and they all liked them because they felt quick and light on its feet.

so we drove a 2014, refreshed one. Things my wife didn’t like about it “it takes a lot of work to get going, feels heavy and difficult to drive.”

To be fair, testing a car at 4500 feet knocks a little of the starch out of a car.

drove an MDX. Liked that LOTS. Shocked. the one we drove was CRAZY clean (like new) but 89k miles for 20 grand and an upcoming $1800 service didn’t feel right.
