La France, toujours divisée

After Round 2 of the presidential elections, here’s the outcome.

M Macron in orange, and the darker the shade the higher his vote. Mme Le Pen in pink, because pink for a girl.

As you go from West to East and North, Macron fades a little and Le Pen gains a little. Not as clear a division as after round 1 but still a division as Le Pen appeals to the kind of voter who’d vote Trump and who lives in the forgotten industrialised and formerly industrialised areas.

Lots of pale areas and the only two pinks up north. I wonder what’s wrong up there...

25% abstention. All this makes me wonder what would have happened here if Trump had been running against anybody other than Hillary Clinton.

Well, Pas de Calais (one of the two pink départements) is a former mining area which sounds like the kind of place that’d go for the hard right, Aisne (the other Le Pen victory) is mainly agricultural and farming types tend to be right wing, but you could say the same of some of the Macron areas. In short, I don’t really know.

Interestingly, abstention seems to be higher in areas with a higher Le Pen vote.

That is interesting. There is going to be some interesting post-election analysis in the coming weeks.

I see Calais as a pink district, and I’ve heard of Calais.

It makes a lot of sense why the natives supported Le Pen .

Yes, that would certainly be an issue.

I was always worried that those polls showing Hillary had a 90% chance of winning would make lots of people overconfident and stay home. I was right. Also thanks to the disinformation campaign Hillary’s had since the 90s (and during the election) a lot of people didn’t “trust” her and voted trump or stayed home. http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/11/25/how_russian_propaganda_used_facebook_to_spread_fake_news_during_the_election.html

Strange. The mining areas sound similar to USA coal towns, where Trump did really well.

There were ~130 million votes in the ‘16 election. According to the internet, there are currently 321 million people in the US, and 200 million registered to vote.

Assuming you could get them geographically distributed correctly, there were enough people that couldn’t be bothered to vote that could have potentially voted a 3rd person as president.

I find that fascinating.

Which is why we need to stop having elections on a Tuesday. It’s asinine. Of course, if you make elections on Saturdays, then all the poors will show up. You know, the people who have to go to work on Tuesdays.

That, and the dilution of the non-Trump vote by other candidates. If we had an election run off like they do in France, there would only be two candidates.

No matter who the new president is or not, France needs reformations really bad. It might hurt but protesting against every damn measure isn’t going to help.
