Off to the body shop. No hate for bikers, I used to ride almost ever day, but if you are lane splitting on a circular on-ramp, you are on a curve I can’t see, so when I signal and look, there is nothing there. Then I start my lane change...

Glad he didn’t go down. Engine cage bounced him off my car. Literally rubbed 6 inches of paint off of his right pannier. Cage sure did a bit more to the Golf though. Lane splitting always made me way too nervous to do it very often.

Damn, that sucks. I’m glad everyone was okay.

I thought lanesplitting was only legal when safe, ie on flat ground with good sightlines. I support it as a practice (along with filtering), but doing it on a 2-lane onramp or offramp sounds like reckless driving to me.

It’s a good thing I read your post a second time because I was all ready to rip you a new one. Yeah, splitting lanes on a curved on ramp is all kinds of dumb on the bikers part.

AFAIK it’s only legal in CA, and only at low speeds. And it’s only been explicitly legal in CA for less than a year.

Lane splitting is dumb. Period. It’s fucking stupid.

One lane onramp. Onramp. The single lane runs out under the bridge to the north, and you are on a two lane section of highway. Traffic is bumper to bumper on 5 South before the onramp, to about 1/4 to 1/2 mile after the onramp. The bikers go around the cars in the emergency lane on the ramp, then cross over lane two to split. If I’m going from lane two to lane one, I’m signaling and looking over my left shoulder. If the biker is in the emergency lane at that point I won’t see him/her. If they go across lane two to split lanes after I’ve checked and started my lane change, I may have to take my car to the body shop.

Insurance, however, called me to let me know “We” would be accepting responsibility for the accident, because there is no way to verify that my lane change was made in a safe manner...

Rider said there was no signal, I said there was. Funny thing though, when we pulled over he said “At least you signaled, most people don’t.” Of course if he reported it that way, it would probably have been labeled an avoidable accident on his part.

At least the guy was not seriously injured and he could ride his bike home.

No, there are plenty of scenarios where it is safer. NOT lane splitting is dumb when it is practicable to do so. I have no interest in motorcycling but I certainly respect the idea of lane splitting when done properly. The problem is it seems 90% of bikers do not follow the rules because there are minimal repercussions.

If potentially getting run over when someone is changing lanes in tight traffic is a good idea, then I retract my statement. Otherwise it’s fucking stupid. I don’t want to have to judge the speed of the guy in the lane I am changing into, hope the guy in front of me doesn’t jam on the brakes and look out for the dipshit who thinks riding in an 18" gap at 3 times the rate of the other traffic is good thinking.

Further, explain to me one scenario in which lane splitting is safer than doing what the other 99% of the vehicles on the road are doing.

100% agreed that driving 3 times the speed is a terrible idea. This is why lane splitting is only supposed to be done at a crawl basically.

“UC Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) found that lane-splitting is relatively safe if done in traffic moving at 50 mph or less, and if motorcyclists do not exceed the speed of other vehicles by more than 15 mph.”

I agree though that I would be scared to fucking death of lane splitting if I were to drive a motorcycle. But I feel like the entire activity of motorcycling is an act of risk avoidance and mitigation.

Everything about motorcycling is unsafe. So its all relative. Just like how the best way to avoid getting eaten by a shark is to not swim in the ocean or to avoid lightning by not going outside.
