Kinja'd!!!

A couple weeks ago, I was playing with the BMW USA configurator and noticed it didn’t let me build any 6-Series coupes. I assumed this was temporary, and the coupe would return for the 2018 model year. Turns out, BMW stopped building 6-Series coupes in February but didn’t mention it to anyone until R0ad & Track asked .

You can still buy a 6-Series convertible or gran coupe, which is of course not a coupe at all but rather a longer, lower 5-Series sedan. There are assorted already-built 6-Series coupes on dealer lots, but beyond that, if you want a big BMW coupe, you’ll have to wait until the 8-Series shows up.

I’m sure everyone will complain about it because it’s yet another large bulbous modern BMW design and not this.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s not like too many people complained that the two generations of Bangle-fied 6-Series coupes weren’t this, right?

That’s weird considering the “new” M6 GT3 cars that replaced the Z4 GT3 are only a year old.

Read about it this morning too. It’s a shame as the 6/M6 Coupe was perhaps my favorite BMW. Also in consideration M4/4 Series coupe and any 5 series.

On the other hand, maybe paving the way for a new 8 series coupe??

This marketing image is now totally obsolete. What are we going to do?

I really liked the F12 6-Series. I go on the configurator literally every day, so I noticed this the day it happened.

I liked the 6-Series so much I made it into an art project in high school.

I love large GTs, so this makes me sad. If I were BMW, I’d can the coupe and convertible models and just replace them with a single convertible hardtop.

I’d also axe the “gran coupe” because fuck that thing.

According to the article on the FP they are still making GCs. It’s just the two door that got axed.

They’re homologated until 2020, but I imagine we’ll see a new BMW GT3 car alongside the GTE car for the 2018 season. Expect news at Le Mans.

I’ve seen way more 6GCs on the road than the coupe. Probably because it allows one to have a “special” looking car in that it’s not a regular tall 5-series but still is a generally useful large sedan, albeit with less rear headroom. Whereas the coupe, even with it being a big coupe, still has the usual coupe practicality tradeoffs.

Actually the same applies with my E92, and BMW coupes in general. I see plenty of E90 and F30 3-series sedans but way fewer E92s and 4-series. Actually I think the 2-series is probably eating most of the 4-series sales. Because unlike the 1-series coupe which was rather ungainly looking compared to the E92 (and I can say this having owned both a 135is and my current E92 335xi), the 2-series is generally pretty decent looking and you don’t gain much of anything stepping up to the 4.

The gran coupe is a good looking car, but the terminology is dumb. Ultimately though they are going to have to converge the 4-doors. Given the need for fuel efficiency, it seems likely we’ll end up with something closer to the more aerodynamic gran coupe. Remember: you are allowed at most one tall friend.

Well yeah, that’s what I’m saying here also. I actually didn’t realize there was an FP post about this before I posted it. Oh well.

If I have to be friends with someone who gets to be tall, then I reserve the right to make sure that they’re never comfortable in my car.

I mean, if people actually cared, it wouldn’t have taken three months for us to notice.

And no matter what happens with the 8 series, people will be unhappy since it won’t have a V12 or a manual or be a bit of a turd like the original 8 series.

For whatever reason, almost every 4-Series I see is the convertible. Which I frankly think is far and away the best looking of the three.

Which I think supports your comment about the 2-Series eating into the 4's sales. If I were in the market, I’d probably take a two coupe or sedan over a 4, but if I wanted a convertible, I’d definitely take the 4's hardtop over the 2's soft top.

So now the 6 series coupe will be the 8 series? Even though the 6 series is supposed to be the 5 series coupe. BMW needs to stop the shit already....

The downside of the 4 convertible is cargo room. My dad drives an ’07 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible that he bought new. He didn’t want a hardtop convertible because it eats up nearly the whole trunk with the top down. He drives it year-round, but especially for people buying it as a not-primary car, the ability to take a weekend top-down jaunt with a couple suitcases in the trunk down is more important than the hardtop. He’s your stereotypical rich guy driving top down from his one house in the DC suburbs out to his other house on the Eastern shore of Maryland where his boats are parked.

But the 8-Series was a very pretty turd.

I don’t like where BMW design language is going with their huge grilles and just as huge borders around the grilles
