I mean they could have at least had the model put the socket near a nut/bolt.

Edit : he’s obviously checking the muffler bearings

The commercial that bothers me most: They have a scene where a guy is working on a Camaro, but they have the ratchet clicking sound backwards. Why does this particular one bother me? IT’S FOR A FREAKING PARTS STORE THAT SELLS THE DAMNED TOOL!

Yes, of course- the 65,000 mile muffler bearing re-torque!

Kinja'd!!! "Tristan" (casselts)

But the person making the commercial has never SEEN a ratchet...

Looks like maybe there’s a strap around the muffler, so it’s possible there is actually a nut there to tighten. (Not sure why that’d need to be done during a tuneup though....)

There is one somewhere for a technical school where the kid has the ratchet and socket held up to the sidewall of a tire.

I did think about the strap, but I’d think a bolt for that would be parallel to the strap, or completely perpendicular, not at some odd angle.

Depends on how it’s tied into the frame. I was imagining the bolt being tangent to the oval of the muffler, above where we can see it.Either way, the bolt doesn’t need to be square to the frame (Unless the bolt is screwed into the frame).

Kinja'd!!!

Something like that, but with the bolt above the muffler.

Also, he needs safety glasses.

He could be in the process of moving towards/away from the nut, causing the angle. But that’s probably reaching.

Have to put in the summer oil. Back when oils sucked. Also probably other old car tech that needed to be serviced more frequently (e.g. carbs, points, etc.)

This is why I think its funny when my Dad or other older gentlemen will complain about new cars being so unreliable and junk. Meanwhile I drive my Miata 25k miles a year and end up doing very minimal maintenance, just replacing very old parts every once in a while. Tire compounds, oil, and fuel injection are such huge advances in modern vehicles.

Was this sarcasm? My mechanic just charged me $1500 for this service. He said that he’d need to drop the catalytic converter to get to the muffler bearings and it would take 10 man hours. I’m starting to feel like I was ripped off.

Also probably other old car tech that needed to be serviced more frequently (e.g. carbs, points, etc.)

This. A lot of carburetors needed to be readjusted for seasonal air temperature changes, since the air density varied so much. MAF sensors make air/fuel management so much more automatic with electronic fuel injection.

What is a tune up anyway? You take your car to s mechanic and he changed a few fluids, maybe replaces some stuff. What has he tuned?

I feel like this word is a relic of carburetors that just won’t die

Kinja'd!!! "Tristan" (casselts)

Fact. I assume a tune up is just overpaying for a spark plug change and a bottle of injector cleaner.

Give it a vague name and nobody would dare attempt it at home.

Then there’s the whole Japanese tuner craze. Because glueing on side skirts is tuning a car
