Kinja'd!!!

What does it take for one to look good? Beacuse it almost always looks cheap and plasticky.

I think the easiest way to get slightly closer to “good” is to just plastidip the whole car.

I’ve always assumed they look like that because the solvents are designed to evaporate so quickly that the paint dries unevenly and just looks off.

Well you have to use real auto paint and sand layers before a clear coat I think. There are tutorials online I’ve seen. Better to rent a spray rig though.

I think thats like asking why you see very few mercury topaz racing cars. No matter what you do to it, its not a great place to start.

Prep. When you think you did enough, do some more.

pretty much this. but if you use the same steps with even basic rattle can crap you get decent results.

My experience of them is largely negative. I rattle canned the bumper on my Twingo until I had time to do it properly with my spray gun/ compressor (still havent yet). It looks terrible, flat and doesnt match. I did spend a lot of time on prep and yet still bad results. Some may have found ways to make it work, but generally its to be avoided for anything other than small stuff (mirror caps, wheels etc).

Biggest issue from my experience is the tight circular spray pattern. Something wider (even a little) will make it easier to overlap leading to less tiger striping and uneven paint thickness.

To be honest I’d look in to renting spray equipment. Might end up close to the same price given how cheap quarts/gallons of Rustoleum are vs. spray cans, but don’t quote me on that.

This is assuming you aren’t a dicknuts about the basics like masking, disassembly, and prep.

“What does it take for one to look good?”

Not doing a rattle can paint job?

But yeah, using actual automotive paint, from someplace like Automotive Touchup can look good, but you have to spend all the times.

Yeah I’ve seen amazing stuff, when I was fixing the z temporarily down low non the doors and after we replaced the dog legs, I gave to three coats, sanded and clear coated. Because it was in the shadow down low you couldnt see any issue. We are repainting the car now though.

I did have to do an image search:

It’s not a real race car though, it’s from some Bollywood NASCAR movie (also it appears to say Pontiac on the B-Pillar for whatever reason):

It is impossible. Don’t do it. Don’t waste your money on the cans and don’t add to the world of rattlecan paint jobs. Just say no

You would be better off doing a wrap. Might be more money and hard to get just right, but it’s easier than getting a rattle can job right. And by easier, I mean it’s actually possible.

At least plastidip is theoretically temporary. Rattle can is forever.

The biggest issue with spray can paint jobs, IMO, is that they never seem to have the correct paint/thinner ratio. For paint to actually come out with a smooth finish it needs to have enough fluidity -- if it’s too fluid it’ll run, if it’s too thick it’ll end up tacky and rough -- and this is controlled through the amount of solved mixed in. Unfortunately, how much solvent to put in depends on temperature and humidity, so normally one would test by spraying onto a piece of glass and adding thinner gradually until the paint dries out smooth without running down. You can’t do that with spray paint cans.

I was going to point out a similar video. Rolling (with proper preperation) does work adiquately. Then again, with enough sanding and patience, spray cans work pretty well too.

dont do it. unless you dont care about the car or ever painting it correctly. it looks like crap and doesnt last and has to be removed if you want to paint it with real paint.

I rattle canned my camper shell and the sides look great because it is mostly window. Luckily the top is only visible to really tall people and brodozer drivers because it looks like striped shit up there. (Still infinitely better than red camper on white truck)
