Here in Illinois in an effort to reduce distracted driving they have banned the use of cell phones while driving, but have they gone far enough?

On by way to work this morning I spotted a true innovator, circumventing the laws in order to do what he loves best, not paying attention while driving.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, this is while driving down the street. He as a newspaper fully opened over the steering wheel (couldn’t even fold it in half). Wow!

In a (maybe?) unrelated story, four days after putting my summer tires back on I had a slow leak, which yesterday I traced to a small cut in my sidewall. It’s a real bummer because the tires had about 6/32nds left which should have been good for one of two more track days and maybe the summer. With the cost of replacing my clutch earlier this year, I really was not hoping to not buy tires (and wheels) this year, but such is life.

On the upside I’m going to get to try some new tires based hotness, I’m going with Hankook R-S4s, upsized to 255 40 R17, see if those aren’t the greatest thing since the RE-71R but with some actual durability. Those wider tires mean I’m going to need to pester my parts guy to get the new wider and 8lb lighter wheels that I want fast. Which is especially important since I’m going on vacation for 8 days starting next week and when I come back I have a track day planned 3 days later.

ah well, just means I’ll get to really play with the new tires sooner and see what they can do.

In the meantime I’m borrowing wheels from a friend, everyone loves 18's but I really like the look of 17's better for some weird reason. Doesn’t hurt that tires cost 70$ a piece less either.

Pretty much all newspapers have switched from broadsheet to smaller paper formats so this is safer than in years gone by.

Here it’s “Handheld devices”. I’m wondering what the legal definition of “device” is.

For example, reading a book (for the record NO I DO NOT). Is a book a device? In this context it probably should be. However if a book can be classed as a device, so can food. Or a drink.

???

Here in WI we’re far behind the times. Its only illegal to use a phone in a work zone.

Otherwise, TEXTING is illegal, but talking is not. I once asked a cop how they could tell the difference if someone was dialing a number versus texting and he says “Honestly, we can’t”

I’m fine with banning all of those. I commute through over 40 miles of Chicago’s BS traffic daily and I see an accident pretty much every other day that was in all likelyhood caused by someone paying no attention ( a rear ending)

I was asked to pull over when I glanced at my phone while stopped at a light! My window was down and he just spoke to me ha. My argument is there are full on computer screens in cars. So if I go pushing buttons on a huge touchscreen in a new car it’s ok? But I can’t just look at my phone to see if a message alert has popped up?

I’ve also seen people reading newspapers while driving.

Ban reading.

I don’t like eating and driving, but I have been in a big enough rush to do it. Lesson: don’t eat anything messy. If you don’t have to think about how to eat it it’s fine. As a general rule, I suggest “if there are more than 4 components to the food (bun ingredient ingredient bun for example) it must be in a wrap”.

Banning drinking is a straight-up no. I’m not going to pull over every time I need a little water. And frankly if you can’t steer and drink from a bottle at the same time you probably shouldn’t be driving.

My dad is/was the king of this. He’d be talking on his cell phone (before it was illegal, it was only stupid then), while simultaneously lighting a cigarette and reading a building blueprint, all while steering with his knees. Nevermind I was in the truck with my license and perfectly happy to drive while he talked to the sub contractor ... nope, wasn’t gonna happen.

Also, 17's look better. 18's are too much wheel for that size opening.

no, that is not the same thing. glancing at at set display that always shows similar things versus reading a message, that you likely will think about and want to respond to are very different levels of distraction

I hear what you’re saying, but at the same time I see people driving with a coffee held in their left hand and it is just clearly a bad idea, particularly if you actually have to drive, ,   as opposed to mindlessly steer down the road for example because someone has pulled out in front of you.

I didn’t read anything, I just looked to see if something poped up. People do all kinds of things to change radio stations, gps and that is a lot more than seeing if a (1) is on there

Up here, they have the law against using handheld electronic devices, but they can also nail you for not having “due care and attention.”

It doesn’t stop 90% of the people on the roads from driving with their heads planted firmly up their own asses though.

...and if your electronic device is securely mounted, like say to a dash mount, it no longer meets the requirements of a handheld electronic device and is then legal to use whilst driving, presuming you use due care and attention.

Oh sure, I’ll give you that. Have your drink and put it down.

Nevertheless I maintain banning hydration while driving is stupid.

Come on, be honest, what would you do if it had popped up?

I don’t type in the car, I was just wondering if someone at work got back to me. It says who it is next to the alert so I don’t have to think about it. If it’s my big boss I have an ear bluetooth thing so I can call him with hands free.
