Kinja'd!!!

I bought my M5 the Christmas before last from a seller in Detroit. I picked up the car with the plan of driving it to New Jersey to store in my parent’s garage until Spring and then probably ship it back.

By the time I reached Ohio I had decided that plan needed a revision.

I went and visited my parents, got the XM radio turned on (bye bye gospel and angry preachers on the radio) and headed south. I drove down the Blue Ridge Mountains, then headed west. I crossed through the South, the dreaded Texas, the South West, and then up the coast of California where I promptly rented a garage and put the car away until Spring.

I had never driven across the country before, and doing it in luxury with a roaring engine and paddle shifters humming along to satellite radio is really goddamn perfect.

Well, I just finished hosing most of the dead bugs off again after this weekend’s trip down the coast to Long Beach where I proceeded to burn up freeways all over LA visiting other family and then back up I5 with speed that tapped 114 mph at one point. Again, in luxury, so you don’t notice the speed quite so much.

I put on about 1,000 miles this weekend.

Felt good, man. Felt real good.

Doing it right. How does it sound when you get on it? Does it still have an induction growl like the e39 M5?

Yeah, try to avoid that 114 mile per hour thing in the future.

A little jealous of the cross-country trip. I’ll have to do that sometime.

It’s got a gnarly Dinan exhaust. It’s all you hear when you give it the juice, but no freeway drone at all. Going through a tunnel at 65-70 mph in 3rd at 8k rpm brings the chorus to life and the crowd to their knees and possibly cause the rapture so that Jesus can hear it better.

75 mph in 7th on the freeway and all you hear is tire and wind noise. The car is goddamn magic.

No matter how fast as I can get there and back, the jail sentence remains a constant. Barren stretch, no chance of police, well sorted car, moment of impulsive stupidity.

I’m still waiting for my roll bar to finish fabrication for the track car. One more month and I’ll be back where I belong with that nonsense.

That sounds glorious. I imagine that’s what all M cars are like based on my limited experiences in them. They’re subtle when cruising around town but when you unleash them they make it known to the world that they mean business. I can’t forget this one Facebook clip I watched of an e60 M5 doing a WOT pull in a tunnel somewhere. It sounded like a v10 F1 car (not a stretch).

You’ve made me remember I should save for an M car and not mod the BRZ. Somehow Oppo has been a positive influence for once.

Still, any surprise pothole, wayward albatross, or other person on the road could be an issue. Just would rather not hear bad news on your end.

And good to hear. It would be nice if we could convince insurance companies to cover some track day fees as an incentive to keep some of that need for speed stuff off the roads.

As the E60 M5 is powered by a V10 engine derived from an F1 engine, yes. Nothing wrong with your hearing sir. You nailed it exactly.

Wow, a whole 114 mph in an M5. I think I hit that back in high school in my girlfriend’s 4 banger Ranger. The bimmers do a great job of hiding the speed. I accidentally hit 135 in my wife’s X1 while driving through Montana once. Whoops. Your indicated 114 was probably only 100 mph so don’t feel too bad. I’ve surpased that on my forty five year old motorcycle.

Speedometers in modern cars are usually 2 to 4 mph off max at those speeds. That 114 was probably still 111 mph.

They’re usually a percentage off. The faster you go, the more mph they’re off. Modern BMW is more than 3-4 mph off at speeds over 100 mph.

It’s hilarious, really. These cars are made to spend hours at 155 mph on the autobahn, and some here are balking about doing 3/4trs of that for a split second. I get it that it’s illegal, but on an open, long stretch with good visibility and little traffic...

I track it too. It gets well into the triple didgets when I do. The thing is, public roads get pot holes. Someone might have lost a bicycle off the back of their van.

How does it do at the track? I feel like I’m already carrying plenty of weight with my E90 at 3700 lbs, but she’s still a good “dance partner”. Always a good time passing someone at the track in a four-door family sedan!

It’s heavy. Really heavy. It’ll happily accelerate like crazy right past just about everything but the turns require patience. I also need to tend to my brakes and get better fluid and pads as they get a bit soft which is a confidence killer. Knowing how much it’ll hurt financially should I bend something is a confidence killer too.

I think maybe not the next owner but perhaps the guy after that will own a car they don’t mind beating on a bit and they’ll get a lot more out of it, track wise. When it comes to gobbling up interstate though it can’t be beat.

I use ATE Typ200 fluid and StopTech Street Performance pads (didn’t want to go so aggressive that I’d be tearing up my rotors on a regular basis). Only performance mods are a primary cat delete and tune (BPM). The real limiting factor right now for my lap times is clearly driver ability!

I love the way I can just think about doing something on the highway, and right when I make the move, it’s pretty much done. The responsiveness of these engines is just spectacular.
