Kinja'd!!!

I would gladly welcome a 1st-gen X1 to my driveway. It also meets all of my wife’s criteria for her next car.

What the hell is happening? Four years ago we could barely afford whatever broke on her Sable, and now I’m window-shopping crossovers.

Kinja'd!!!

I am seriously considering its quirky British sibling as me first newish car purchase once I have been out of school for a little bit.

That seems to be the potential inevitability

The want for one of these might actually be a hint that way.

I liked the X1 on paper because it’s basically an outbacktified 335i hatch, but when I test drove one, I found the back seat is too small to be useful. It barely passed the sit behind myself test.

You can always outbackify a 3 series wagon.

I like the way they look too, but I am completely unwilling to stomach out of warranty German car repair bills, so I will stick with our CX-5.

In 2013, the ‘good’ car was an ‘05 Malibu for us. The other car was a 16-year-old Saturn.

In 2014, we made enough spare cash in the budget for my Tacoma.

In 2015, the Saturn was on it’s last legs, and we replaced it with a leased ‘15 Accord.

Now she’s driving a company car...we didn’t need 3, so we sold the Malibu and banked the cash.

Fortunes and lives change.

Here’s my wife’s vehicle progression over the last 6 years.

Jetta

- adopt a Newfoundland

Ford Escape

- add baby 1

Jeep Grand Cherokee

- add baby 2

Tahoe

Good luck

I actually hate outbacktified cars in general. But there’s no 335i wagon in the US so the X1 35i was the closest we got.

It can’t be much worse than the Vibe

CX-5 seems like the obvious (and correct) choice.

I hated the idea of the X1, but my wife really liked them and her 335d kept shitting the bed. I got hers as a CPO with 36kish miles on it. I got a great deal on it as it is Valencia orange and was being sold at a very high end dealer where everyone wants white BMWs. They couldn’t sell the thing.

I’ve owned three BMWs and this has been the most reliable by far. I have 70k miles on it now and the only thing that has needed replacing was the coolant reservoir. I got free oil changes from BMW but I always made sure to do them myself in between their 10k+ Mike intervals.

I hate autos, but the ZF8 is a great transmission and the best auto I’ve ever driven. I have the turbo four and it has good power for an everyday car and gets great mileage (I have gotten it to 36 mpg for freeway driving).

The car handles great for a crossover and even though the electric steering isn’t as good as their hydro units it is still good. This car has definitely won me over.

Now that I’ve said all that the engine will probably grenade on me tomorrow.

I don’t know, the X1 always struck me as an average CUV that you pay extra for because of the badge.

Well for me it would a 6 year old used car so it would by then cost less than a used CX-5

The original X1 was available with rear wheel drive and shared a platform with the acclaimed E90 3-Series. Definitely not your average crossover.

What about a 2013+ RDX? Similar size and likely more amenities and it might be more reliable long term.

I know the turbo 4 RDX from the early gen wasn’t too good but 2013 and up got a V6. I love the first gen X1's but I don’t know if I would trust it’s reliability.

Most fwd or otherwise transverse engine 5-door hatches are a lot roomier inside. The only one that comes to mind with worse interior room is the Mazda CX-3 which is absolutely tiny. But my wife’s Impreza, for example, has a much roomier back seat than the X1 even with it being more of a rwd style longitudinal layout.
