Its going to start at £30,995. That converts over to just north of $40 grand. Thats...a lot. Should we be worried? Yes and no. For one we cant really expect our prices to line up with the UK markets. And Honda has said we can expect an MSRP in the mid $30's.

On the other, other automakers have their US and UK models priced similar. For Example a Focus RS starts at £32,265. That’s pretty much almost in line with what the RS starts here in the US at $35-36 grand.

Bottom line: $40 grand is a lot, even for a Civic Type R. The only other time a Civic has cost this much was last decade with the limited Civic Mugen. Do you guys think if the Type R cost over $40 thousand that’s its cp? Or will it be inline with its competitors?

I think it’s CP, but I’m not a Civic fan. Someone who is might think it’s worth it.

It always seemed to me that UK prices are significantly higher than US prices for the same car.

It’s not going to convert exactly. My guess is $32,000-35,000.

32 is a bit low. I’m thinking 34-38 grand at least.

It’ll be at least $38k with dealership markups.

I’m just worried that Honda it will be successful and Honda will keep making riced our cars covered in fake vents.

I am a Civic fan and I think that’s stupid money for a FWD car.

That feels right, maybe a 35k bottom. Seems like it’s direct competition all starts around there — but they all have AWD. Gotta be in that range somewhere.

Just hope that demand isn’t so strong that they all get slapped with $10k ADM.

A 10k adm is a given. But I’ve never really countered Honda dealers doing that to any models outside of a thousand dollar security add on. Maybe because outside of the Si they haven’t had anything exciting enough to markup.

UK prices have taxes and such rolled in already, because there’s only one tax jurisdiction.

A long long time ago, I worked at a Honda dealer - early 90s.

They were greedy as hell on the special cars then- which mainly consisted of the 4WS Preludes, first Del Sols, etc.

Direct currency conversion is never an accurate price estimate. Never has been.

A more accurate way to gauge pricing is to compare it to similar cars, or other cars in the range (more difficult here, because Honda’s UK offerings have a huge variety of engines and trim lines).

The CTR looks like it just undercuts the Focus RS (their likely price target over the Golf R). In the US, the Focus RS starts at $36,120 before destination. I think $35k is where the CTR will be priced.

Still CP though. But I’m not a fan of high powered FWD cars.

The special stuff. Nothing like that has been offered since the S2000 went away in 09'.

It’s been quite a while since Honda had anything special enough to do that, that’s for sure.

I’ll take a riced out car covered in fake vents that potentially has the performance—or even just that special fun factor—to back up the boy racer look over the endless beige-mobiles Honda’s been producing throughout the last decade and a half (excluding the S2k of course)

The Mugen Si had huge mark ups on them.

They include tax (VAT at 20%).

Exactly. Remove VAT and that ‘$40 grand’ suddenly becomes $33.3 grand. Not that bad anymore, right?

$7-10k, IIRC. I remember seeing stickers in the $38k range. The Mugen Si had a sticker of $30k which was already obscene. They only made 1,000, and I guess dealers figured that if someone was willing to pay $8k more from the manufacturer for a body kit and wheels, they could tack on some more for themselves.

Now, did they sell at that price? I have no clue. They would have come down on them if they sat, I’m sure. Much like when the FR-S launched. Scion’s “No Haggle Pricing” was apparently a one-way street because dealers immediately put $5k “Market Adjustments” on the FR-S.

Thats all the Mugen really was was a kit and wheels. how Honda and dealers thought that translated into a Civic costing over 30 grand I dont know. I saw one for sale a few months back on Autotrader for a littler over 9 grand.

I never head anything about FR-S markups though I assume there were a lot of them. No Haggle pricing is typically bullshit and marketed as in favor of the customer, when in reality it really means “don’t come in here with that bullshit of thinking we are going to budge on the price because we aren’t.”
