my theory is that when she hit the snowbank a couple years ago, it cracked the control arm, which rusted and.... cracked more, a lot more.

Shame he didn’t get the duct tape on that in time. :(

Hopefully all he’ll need is a lower control arm.

Edit - Could this be helpful?

Oof, that sucks. A not-too friendly reminder that what looks like a really nice, clean car from above can be hiding one hell of a lot of rust underneath. Hope the repair isn’t too painful.

I witnessed this at a gas station to a late 90s Mustang. Guy tried leaving and just heard - Creeeeeeaaaak THUNK!

damn, that looks pretty much like what happened but I bet the dealer tells her to go screw because there was previous damage in the area and the will blame it on that

Relevant. I know this is not a steering knuckle but Hyundai are not exactly clean in this instance.

My mom went through at least two tie rods on 1989 and 1995 Fords exactly this way. Hmm...

You should see what Gen 1 U.S. focus sub frames look like near me. Swiss Cheese has more structural integrity.

Yeah, prime reason not to buy a Hyundai.

An old coworker of mine had an Isuzu Trooper that looked clean as could be on top. He brought it to our auto shop teacher from some repairs, who found all the rust underneath it. The body mounts were so badly rusted, one would expect the body to just fall right off in a hard turn. In an ultra-rare case of listening to good advice, when he was told that this thing is so rusty you need to get rid of it right damn now, he bought a new car that weekend.

Good on him! I’m sure he was in shock. I am half afraid to look under my ‘05 Pathfinder. 167k on a city car, never garaged, rarely washed. Body is starting to rust.

Eh, a couple control arms and some tie rod ends, sway bar end links, and it’ll be good to go. Less than $200 in parts probably. Now labor, that’s another story.

Pour one out for the driver’s side rocker panel of my ‘06 Sierra crew cab. I decided to stop at a body shop and get an estimate on my way home ... $3250!!!
