When people put obviously undersized tires on their vehicle. I’m not talking about doing it for aesthetic reasons. I’m talking about when somebody is too much of a cheapskate to replace their worn tires with appropriately-sized new ones and has the tire shop put on the smallest, cheapest ones that will fit. Don’t know why, but it bugs the hell out of me.

Only in a Jeep? Reminds me of an old timey railroad service vehicle made to run on train tracks. And I won’t even get started on the wide whites, like the Delorean in 1955.

Good thing he has 6" Pocket Flairs on there to protect against all the kicked up rocks. Also, nice that he has a full size spare that is 100% completely useless, usually the other way around 35" tires and a 28/29" spare. This person needs counseling.

he might be having new tires mounted on new wheels and thats just what the shop had put on for him so he could still use his truck in the meantime

Well sometimes off road people have stuff they are installing and just have those tires until they get it all done. I have no idea if that’s why this jeep is that way.

Rollers, just to roll around the shop or takes the “lift” away from the bigger tires and make it easier to reach into engine bay. I’m too lazy right now to look up my photo.

But it wouldn’t increase fuel consumption, or at least it’s not a sure thing. You’d decrease rolling resistance and rotating mass, so it’s more likely to increase it. Also, your speedo/odo would read higher than actual, so your calculated consumption would be much less as well.

Kinja'd!!! "NJAnon" (NJAnon)
05/08/2017 at 19:04, STARS: 1

Well in racing, yeah you test with a 18inch wheel sometimes instead of 19inch wheel since its smaller rotating mass and lighter.

But on regular cars, its comes off shoddy when you do it like how that Jeep looks. Im pretty sure you can find the correct size of wheel in that design for that Jeep AND still get whitewall tires too.

Kinja'd!!!

A different case. This was my Fiero when I bought it. I love the period correct aftermarket wheels, and they had good and really new tires. But no one makes 15" tires in the right diameter anymore. So I had to basically waste those, and spend a bunch more to upgrade wheels *and* tires.

calculated consumption=/=actual consumption

You’d still have to work the engine harder to do the same work. I can’t see the MPG getting better, unless you have something like a Raptor and don’t reduce the tire size too much.

The Jeep in the main post? No way that doesn’t burn more fuel.

calculated consumption=/=actual consumption

Part of my point, you wouldn’t notice any increased consumption (if there actually is any).

The Jeep in the main post? No way that doesn’t burn more fuel.

Under the exact same conditions? They’re thinner and lighter, less rolling resistance and less rotating mass, both will decrease fuel consumption so I’m not sold. That rolling resistance is a killer.

Going by real-world results? The speedo’s going to read higher, so it’s likely you’ll drive slower, reducing aerodynamic drag. So will being lower to the ground. I’d bet the Jeep gets 10% better fuel economy with the little tires vs. stock.

I put an 8-ply mud tread tire on my truck replacing more appropriately weighted balding all terrains, exact same size, and I lost 3 mpg. Went from 18 hwy, 15 average to 14/15 hwy 10/12 average. More weight, more contact area, it’s going to burn more fuel.

TL:DR: it may look ridiculous, and increase tire wear, but it’s not likely to increase fuel consumption, calculated or actual.

Some people wouldn’t. I would. I track my trips and if I go anywhere new to me I check the distance via google maps (less down to a passion for accuracy and more down to never remembering to check the odo at the beginning and end of trips).

...I was going to work out mathematically why I’m right and realized you probably were, at least based on a rough estimate of that Jeep’s tire size over on stock. Figure those tires have about a foot less circumference than stock, just on an eyeball estimate, so ~138 more rotations per mile... not a huge increase. Or at least not as big as I’d expected. DAMN YOU :)

If you drive off the speedo, then yes. I suppose an unfortunately high number of people do this, so I’ll allow it. If you drive by feel, you’ll probably end up somewhere in between.

I went from a highway tire to an A/T tire and ended up with no difference. Same tire size. Granted I picked the lightest I could find, but still heavier than stock. And I drive it harder now because the highway tires were garbage... So by all accounts it should be worse.

TL;DR I dunno
