I’ve had a Ranger for almost 48 hours now, and I can’t stop thinking about things I want to get for it! I’ve already ordered a bunch of parts, my buddy gave me some really nice folding loading ramps, and I’ve got a Stereo on the way. I keep a small tool/supply bag in every vehicle, but I feel that I should be better equipped in the pickup.
So far I’ve got:
Tow Straps
Tarp
Cargo Net
First Aid
Paracord
Emergency jump starter/USB charger
Flashlight
I’m working on creating a toolkit, but I’d love to hear specific suggestions.
Also “Red Ted” is a Ranger “Edge” which I believe is a step above the base spec. So storage is very limited. On top of that the console is without a lid. So right now I’m limited to the glove box/cup holders. So any suggestions on that are welcome as well, purchase or DIY.
Even if ya don’t have a pickup, watcha got in der?

I keep a small tool box with a socket wrench, with 10mm head.
T25 Star bit + Rotating Magnetic Screwdriver
Extra lights + Bolts that have mysteriously appeared after working on the car
10mm wrench
17mm socket wrench head.
Im pretty sure I could take 90% of the car apart with the T25 bit, and 10mm wrench.

This is highly practical! Who needs bumpers? I’ve always thought these looked epic all prerunner’d out but unfortunately that costs double the price of a nice one lol.
The Q is outfitted with contact soln, a case, and some hand sanitizer or is wipes. Nothing is more disgusting than smelling snacks on your hands and getting grease on your steering wheel. I also used to have a tiny pencil holder affixed to a rear floormat which was super goofy so I got rid of it and became even more OCD about no trash in my car.

My Sierra (’95) doesn’t have much room behind the seat (reg cab). But I built a little tray to help keep a few items from sliding under the seat.
Misc fluids, cargo bar, moving blanket, tarp, ratchet straps, ball-mount, 7pin-to-4pin wiring adapter, medium-duty work gloves, and during winter months a snow/ice brush.

If I had an extended cab I’d probably have more stuff. I really should get some ratchet straps at least. But because I actually have usable rear seats I don’t want to obstruct them any more than absolutely necessary.

Don’t forget Shackles for your tow straps. A snatch strap is nice too. I keep a 20' tow strap and a 30' Snatch. It is also a good idea to get a water tight box to keep all of your strap/tow/recovery equipment in. I had the great idea that all of it would stay in the cab, that lasted about a week till everything made it to the bed. I got one of the HD plastic tool boxes from Lowes and took all of the shelves out of it.
Also Electrical tape and Hose Patch kit.

I’d have the same issue here in MA. Also you can totally have 90% of the fun with bigger tires and a cheap lift.

ha. I’ve got a 2011 Ranger Sport 4x4 SuperCab, which you might think is equipped as a mid- or top-of-the-line model, right?
Nope. crank windows, manual locks, no carpet (vinyl floor,) no cruise.

Mostly junk, but I do have a number of cargo straps, always very useful. Get a mix of large and small. I do have a well used tow strap and some rope. I have a topper for the bed. Hated it when I got it, don’t know what I would do without one now. Although at the moment it is off the truck, stored at a job site. That’s the great thing, take it off when you need the extra room, put it on when you need security. Just remember to unplug the break light, I never do. A small tool bag, that’s missing too many tools these days. I have my Tire Iron Cross, Which I bought way back on the mid 80's. Jumper cables. When I got it, it had an auxiliary Battery, but when my Battery died I moved the auxiliary to my main battery, and then my isolator died, and I never replaced the battery or the isolator. I do have an after market radio, as it came with one that did not work well. I’ve added SiriusXM to the radio, but right not it is not working. I try to keep shop towels in the truck, but most often I am out. I know at one time I had a first aid kit, and a blanket. Put those in after being first on seen to 3 accidents with critically injured people in 2 weeks time. I know the blanket is missing, not sure if the first aid kit is still around, I think it is. I’ve added some helper leaf springs to the rear. Receiver hitch front and rear. Towing mirrors. I also added after market head lights. Hmmm... ok more to it then I thought. Ohh and of course K&N air filter... now its fast too.

I’m taking notes for our Jetta Smyth Ute build. I’m already planning to give it a little lift with VR6 front springs (it’s a 1.8T car) and wagon rear springs, plus beefier tires on some 15" alloys I need to refinish. Will add some extra lights too because the stock ones suck and lights look cool. And the ham radio, because rally.

A tow strap that is “stretchy”. It allows you to get a run at recovering a vehicle and it adds kinetic energy in the strap that absorbs the abrupt jolt of a plain tow strap.
Expensive for Frequent Use
Affordable for Occasional Use
I have the Smittybilt one, it has never let me down in my jeep or 1/2 ton.

- A basic tool set, that needs to be gone through and updated
- Receiver with 3 interchangeable balls, 1-7/8", 2", 2-5/16"
- Tow strap with about a 2 foot long piece of really heavy chain (in case of no tow hooks or places you don’t want to wrap your strap around)
- About a dozen tie down straps, two or three of them heavy duty 3" ones
- Leatherman
- Light socket adapter, 7 round to 4 flat, and trailer light tester
- Several pocket knives
- couple of random screw drivers and crescent wrenches
- fire extinguisher
I’ve actually got more stuff than I thought, but most of it is cleverly hidden and tucked into various crevices behind seats/under seats, so when I look in my truck I don’t really see any of it, and all of my seats are still easily usable.

the tool kit, a tire plug kit, 25 feet of air hose, some coat hangers, 20'electrical wire, electric tape,connectors, some zip ties, rope, chains, spares( distributor, fuel filter,clamps) big hammers, jack, and star, gallon of gas, jumper cables. shotgun and case of shells. there is more, but that is the stuff that i recall off the top of the head......

Ratchet straps, bungee cords, work gloves are all additional must haves. If it has a Berliner it may have little slots you can slide a length of 2x6 into. Get a board and cut it to length if it’s set-up for it. You can put small items in place so they don’t slide around.
