Kinja'd!!!

Just a quick job with a few rattle cans of silver plasti dip, nothing fancy. It took a good 10 years off the look of this car. They were so roached that you could see the damage from 40 feet. And now? It’s a 10 footer! From this side at least.

Edit: should’ve included a before picture. If you zoom in it’s even worse.

They’re actually fine, the entire car is covered in a film of pollen. The hood looks yellow from the driver’s seat.

Hard to tell from the picture. White or silver?

Very soon!! The rear suspension is dangerously blown, its even a maintenance item at this point... I won’t go super low on the stock wheels tho, just nineties dad low until I shell out for 19s.

Silver! Specifically for wheel painting. Or racing stripes, as the packaging suggested...

I just give up from now - June. It’s a lost cause.

Thx! A little zoom on the wheels should show it. Super nasty flaking clear that attracted brake dust.

Nice! While I don’t generally dislike white wheels, they would look out of place on a luxobarge.

Agreed. That’d be a little too much for this old thing!

Thanks! I was impressed with the finish too, we’ll see how long it lasts though.

Looks great! Which products did you use to do this? The wheels look like they had a decent bit of curb rash before – is that still there, just under the new layer of paint, or did you smooth it down or something too? Does the finished product have that a glossy silver finish like they came out of the factory? Or are there various levels of gloss-matt finish you can buy?

I have a set of old wheels my car came with that is pretty banged up that I’m hoping to do something similar on, but they’re pretty rare wheels so don’t want to completely mess them up myself. Appreciate any recommendations on products or tips!

Thanks! This was the sloppiest job imaginable. Except for the masking, that was a real pain. I just went to Autozone, bought some cans of “silver” plasti dip, and went to town on the wheels after a good scuff with some 400 grit. The wheels actually weren’t particularly curb rashed, the clear coat was flaking off so bad that dirt and brake dust would stick to wherever it was missing, turning it black.

There’s no gloss here, more of a matte metallic. It looks like a factory finish from veeerryy close up though. Though you could definitely get some plasti dip clear coat to spray on afterwards. I was just super curious re: plasti dip in general and didn’t expect much. This stuff blew me away TBH! We’ll see how long it stays on there.

If you’re messing with vintage wheels I’d definitely go all out on a full refinish instead of this. I mean you can always peel the stuff off or sand it I guess if you’re dying to put them on the car, but if you have gnarly curb rash that needs to be carefully bondo’d over and sanded anyway, you may as well commit to actual paint. For a quick and dirty tho... not bad!

Thanks! I’ll definitely look in to those options. Good idea on the clear plastidip layer on top for a gloss finish. They’re not particularly fancy wheels…they’re just random 80s Zenders that came with my E30. Haven’t seen the wheel before, and being a popular 80s after market option for BMWs figured it’s something worth at least cleaning up. Not sure I’d bother putting the money in to getting them painted and fully refreshed though.

From your little profile picture seems like you have good taste in big cars between the Q45 and…what is that, an old 7 series?
