Out of 12 cars I’ve owned, I’ve owned 11 different brands - and the one repeat is a dead brand (Oldsmobile). Clearly I’m not brand loyal.

4 of the 11 are dead - Olds, Pontiac, Saturn, and Mercury.

I bet plenty of Oppos have owned more than that - how many have you owned?

Yes, it ’ s lunchtime Monday and I ’ m bored. Sorry no pics but Kinja is doing its thing —

I think I am up to 5 brands. 1 Nissan, 2 Fords, 1 Toyota, 3 Volkswagens, and technically 1 Mercury. And thats all at the age of 23. I’ve has a few cars to say the least LOL.

The mercury is technically because it is my girlfriends car and I consider it part mine now since we insure them and register them together since we own a home together.

I was unconditionally loyal and deaf to any naysayers, with no information to back up my position. I’ve since mellowed on that to be able to appreciate other brands, but I’ve a really stubborn streak in me. Having said something I often refuse to go back on it even if it’s obvious I’m totally wrong. Note the fact that because I had a teacher with a Miata once that wouldn’t shut up about it being the best thing ever (jokingly, yes) that we all made fun of, I will never go back on that and even consider a Miata, no matter how much I can appreciate it now.

But at the moment, this has less to do with loyalty and more to do with the fact that I like this truck very, very much and bearing in mind that it’s a combination of simplicity and proven tech, I have no idea when I’ll change vehicles and what’ll be available at that time.

You know that feeling you get when someone gets something new and you start looking for replacements for yours? Could apply to anything. Phone, camera, car, house, etc... I don’t get that feeling with this. I’ve tested other vehicles. I’ve seen vehicles come and go among friends and family during the time I’ve owned my truck. And I have no desire to change, often deliberately look for excuses to take my truck instead of riding with someone else, and always look back when I park.

TL;DR: Smalbear liek bear truhk

But yeah, when my wife gets a new car, then I start getting that itch - partly because I spend as much or more time at dealers looking at them than she does.

Growing up, my family’s driveway was almost all GM products (with few Chrysler exceptions). It never felt like brand loyalty, though. It was just what we were used to, and comfortable with.

So it came as no surprise that my first four vehicles ended up being Chevrolet , GMC , Oldsmobile , then Buick . After that, I decided to give Ford a chance, since I was never given a real reason to dislike them. So my 5th, 6th, and 7th cars were Ford , Mercury , and Ford again. Then for my 8th vehicle, I picked up a GMC . It was like putting on an old glove.

Audi: 3 (1980 4000s, 1990 100, 1991 100)

Ford: 2 (1999 Crown Victoria LX, 2011 Crown Victoria LX (current daily driver))

VW: 1 (1996 Jetta)

Dodge: 1 (1990 RamCharger)

Buick: 1 (1997 LeSabre)

Pontiac: 1 (2010 Vibe base)

Car I loved the most: tie between the 1990 Audi 100 and the 1991 Honda CRX. Both were fantastic to drive, but for very different reasons.

Most reliable: 2011 Ford Crown Victoria

Least reliable: 1997 Buick LeSabre

Scariest to drive: 2010 Pontiac Vibe—unintended acceleration, yes it did occur on the Corolla based Toyota’s!

My Wife:

Jeep: 2 (1990 Cherokee, 1996 Grand Cherokee)

Subaru: 1 (1998 Legacy sedan)

Volvo: 1 (1996 850 wagon)

Dodge: 1 (2007 Grand Caravan SXT)

Buick: 1 (2015 Enclave)

I posted it elsewhere in here, but separate from the main post. Since that Ford (‘96 Taurus LX), I’ve had a BMW 3 series, Nissan Pathfinder, and Lexus GS. Still have all 3, and they’ve all been really great cars (as was the Ford). BMW is 17 years/106k; Nissan is 12 years/167k; Lexus is only a few years old.

I tend to test drive quite a few cars and pick the one that I like, without much regard for the brand itself, although there are a few companies I’m wary of, reliability-wise. Mainly FCA.

Acura (1): 1992 Vigor

What does the inspection cover? Mainly safety items, brakes, emissions, lights and the like? Hard to believe it goes much deeper than that—

Umm, considering I’ve been driving for 33 years, yeah, I’d say so. :)

One Toyota, one Pontiac, one Subaru, one BMW, one Honda. Add Suzuki if you count motorcycles.

This also inspired me to think about this for my dad, who has an Oppo-worthy car history. Please note that he was born in 1955, so the first two of these were quite old by the time he had them. The Scirocco and the Jetta were the only two bought new from a dealer.

MY DAD:

1948 Willys Jeep

1967(?) MG B Roadster

1979 Volkswagen Scirocco

1986(?) Toyota Corolla Wagon ( BROWN MANUAL WAGON )

1991 Ford Ranger

1988 Honda Accord

1993 Toyota Camry

1996 Honda Passport

1999(?) Volvo S70

1997 BMW 328i

2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI ( OOPS )

2006 Toyota Tacoma

None of these overlapped, even for a day, until the VW and the Tacoma while he waited for his buyback appointment—he’s far too fiscally responsible to ever own more than one car at a time. I believe he would tell you that his favorites were the MG, the Scirocco, and the BMW...shockingly, the three small sporty cars he’s owned have been his favorites, and yet he keeps alternating them with small trucks and beige sedans.

Meanwhile, my mom started with a couple of Beetles, then took over the Corolla wagon, had one each of the Chrysler minivans (Caravan, Grand Caravan, Voyager, Town & Country) with kids, and has since moved firmly on to Toyotas (first 11 years with a Highlander and now a hybrid Rav4).

Depends on your definition of antique, from that list, 2 were from 1960, then there is a long gap, 2 from 1987, 2 from 1988, 2 from 1989, 1 from 1991, 1 from 1996, 1 from 1997, 1 from 2003, 2 from 2004, 1 from 2005, 3 from 2006, 1 from 2010, 1 from 2013
87 is not antique to me, it’s my year of birth, and antique means older than I am

Your dad was Oppo before Oppo. That’s a really Oppo-worthy list - and some cool stuff on there. Sounds like he would *like* to own both a small sporty car and something more practical, but just can’t bring himself to own 2 at once.

I got my drivers license in 1984, so you’re damn right that 1987 isn’t an antique!! :) 3 of mine were older than me - ‘65 Cutlass; ‘65 Skylark; ‘64 Dynamic 88. Those are the antiques to me - not the ‘72 Monte Carlo I had.

I think you’re right, although he’s opted to own a succession of small sailboats instead... I’m guessing a trailer was on his mind when he bought the Tacoma. My sister and I have always talked about going in on a restored MG for him if/when we can afford it, but I’m not sure he would really want another car to maintain and insure.

From the PA DMV website:

“suspension components, steering, braking systems, tires and wheels, lighting and electrical systems, glazing (glass), mirrors, windshield washer, defroster, wipers, fuel systems, the speedometer, the odometer, the exhaust systems, horns and warning devices, the body, and the chassis.“

I’m guessing that it will pass inspection, but It’s going to my “non-euro” guy who really go through it and let me know if I need to do anything precautionary etc.

So my dads first car before the VW was an AMC Hornet, he also apparently had a Buick and a Ford after all. I literally had no idea. He may be at the top of the Jalop chain. That VW he drove with no clutch for 3 months and with no reverse for 1. He’s literally stupidly talented to cars. Ended up a 4 wheeling guy over racing but I bet he would be amazing.
