Here’s my deal with buying my next car.

I can’t choose between another Audi and a truck.

Why I need another Audi:

1. I love Audis

2. Manual tranmsission

3. Lots of aftermarket stuff

4. Fun to drive

Why I need a truck:

1. I like trucks

2. I’m buying a 20 foot boat. Can’t tow that with a manual Audi.

3. I’m moving to a rural area, no Audi dealer out here

4. I’ve never owned a truck, but I have owned a bunch of German cars

So, t hat’s that.

Why not just buy a really unreliable truck with expensive parts and a manual transmission? 6.0 Powerstroke? /s

Yup, but I just can’t seem to find one with the mileage I’m looking for and at the price point. They’re either super beat up, not one of the TRD packages, or a bad color.

Remember, the only people that say you don’t need a diesel truck to tow a larger trailer are people that do not own a diesel truck.

You can get a new, lightly optioned, manual, diesel Ram pickup for $40k - $45k range if you buy it right. Less if you go regular cab.

I don’t know if there is a manual audi that you can tow a 20 foot boat with, safely

I need a crew cab because I transport people regularly as well. I’d like a newer Cummins Ram. But the boat I’m towing isn’t all that big and I could easily get the job done with like a Tacoma.

But eventually you’ll want a bigger boat or a camper. Or just to drive a longer distance on the interstate to take your boat to a different water source. It is at that point that you’ll wish you just spent the extra $$$ to get a bigger truck in the first place.

Kinja'd!!! "Tristan" (casselts)

Okay... how about instead of a boat, pick a random inanimate object- say, a rock. Love the rock intensely for 5 minutes, them throw flaming $100 bills at it until you utterly despise it, then get rid of it as quickly as possible.

It’s no use... you’ll just end up wanting another rock- er... boat. Boats are cancer. I hated all 3 of mine and I’ve been boat free for over 2 years. I’ve never wanted one more.

What’s your price point?

Do you like the Colorado?

If you’re definitely getting a boat, then the Audi is pretty much out.

Have you considered a Grand Cherokee? Plenty of torque to tow a boat. You could also go with a Touareg, which can tow 7700 pounds.

I’d recommend looking at pre-DPF diesel trucks, in the ‘05-’07 model year range. A new Cummins/Ecodiesel Ram is real expensive, and the DPF and AdBlue systems will be crazy expensive to repair when they fail (and they will fail.)

The 7.3 PSD doesn’t have to be expensive. There seems to be a huge valuation range. If you’re handy, then you can do what I did and find a mechanically sound truck that is lacking cosmetically, and put in a bit of elbow grease to make it nice. The parts are cheap and the truck is really easy to work on.

I guess it depends on your price range. I’d say the one to get overall though is one of the last of the 5.9 liter Cummins Rams. It does seem like a lot for a truck that it has mileage in the 100k+ range, but they will be reliable and SO much cheaper to run than the new trucks and all the emissions crap they’re saddled with.
