Kinja'd!!!

About a foot long, made of stainless and brass. The disc end is about the size of a 50-cent piece. I found it in the grass while walking the dog. What it be, oppo?

I know I’ve seen it before in an automotive store. My guess is that it’s a small inspection mirror or a magnetic screw grabber.

Nah, not magnetic and not mirrored. :/

That was my first guess, but then I remembered I’m not a cartoon bird.

Some kind of stirrer. That’s my guess.

Google image search says it’s wood and a spoon, but I’m dubious of our algorithm overlords.

If you have to ask then you don’t need to know.

Hmm, hadn’t thought of that! It would easily chuck up into a drill.

I thought some sort of lab stirrer attachment, which would explain the softer, brass end for the chuck - but every one I saw had a aggitating end, not a round puck that that.

So I think it’s a stirrer for a cocktail pitcher.

Brass is often used in tools when they want to avoid creating sparks. The combination with stainless is kind of strange though. Maybe it is some kind of tool dropped by an employee a gas or a pipeline company.

It’s kinda the right size for an inspection mirror, but yeah I doubt it. Part of me was thinking that there might have been a mirror that fell off at some point, but I don’t like that it’s not hinged, and I’m not sure what to make of that brass part, either.

Speaking of which, what’s up with that brass piece anyway? Does it unscrew or anything?

Is it not a timing or engine resonance device?

By placing the copper end on the engine block and then putting your ear close to the paddle bit on the end.

Or a doctors tongue depressor. Brass well known for it’s anti-bacterial properties for the doctor to hold during throat inspection and holding during rinsing the paddle end in some anti bacterial wash for the next patient.

I don’t think so. If it is threaded in there, they it’s awfully tight.

Could be? I thought it may be similar to a tuning fork, but it’s too stiff to resonate in its own.

Also, doesn’t brass not scratch other metals? Maybe it’s a probe of some kind?

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)

I was thinking that by holding the brass, to the block, the length and then larger surface area at the end would amplify the resonance of the engine block. The soft brass would allow the steel section to resonate more than if it was one whole solid steel piece.

That is a metal detecting probe. Used to find out what’s detected without digging a hole. Mostly to prevent digging for cans. They make a different sound than things you would want to actually dig up.
