I went to look at a car this morning. Sold before I got there. Did my shopping, saw a notification that there was a new posting on craiglist (looked good), went home, looked up the other one that I saw on craiglist and it was already sold. Damn!

Is it almost worth going to a place like Copart and bidding on a salvage title Miata? The one in Columbia SC has 2 10AE and a 01 SE up for sale, all them making for great Exocet donors.

In California, I don’t think the general public can bid so I would need to use an agent. I’ve heard a ton of copart horror stories out here (stuff like wheels, shift nobs, steering wheels, and seats mysteriously go missing between auction end and pickup.

Haven’t heard of those stories before but it sounds like it’s a good idea to see the car in person before bidding...or print the webpage and pictures before picking up the car. Copart here has been pretty well behaved as the local Spec Miata shop picks up cars to either fix up, convert to SM race chassis, or salvage them for parts.

Interesting. I’ve been keeping an eye on it (along with IAAI). It seems like IAAI has more Miatas in my area.

Whatever works for you! All you really need for an Exocet is suspension, engine, transmission and shaft, diff, and supporting electronics, right? I’m thinking a lite-flood car, something that’s been vandalized, or a rear-ended (as long as the diff carrier isn’t cracked, but that’s replaceable).

Indeed, that’s about it. Ideally I find a car that I can drive around for a bit to sort out any mechanical issues before exocetting though.
