Kinja'd!!!

I’ve had to shelve the want for a kei car, since I realised how often I actually use my bigger e36 for practical reasons. So whatever replaces the e36 (I’m fairly sure it’s eaten it’s timing chain guides now) has to be somewhat practical. Comically my DD is too small to be practical so my second car has to be able to take that role.

This has me looking at the Toyota Celica. Theyre reliable, dirt cheap, easy to find and have a decent sized boot. I’m hoping to test drive one soon to see if it suits. I know the logical thing is to just sell the Twingo and get one practical but quick car, but I can’t bring myself to sell the damn thing.

A friend of mine had a GT Action Package model with the 5-speed. The 1ZZ was a decent engine, and it seemed to handle really well. You do sit very low to the ground in it though, which was especially noticeable from my 09 Forester.

Thats a plus to me, I’m the kind of guy who adjusts the seat as low as posssible when I get in a car. Just makes me feel more connected to it i guess.

Is it back seat you need or cargo room? If it’s cargo room way not an EP3 Civic Si?

Because, if neither of those things are a high priority then a Celica GTS is quicker and more fun to drive.

I had an 04 T-Sport once, had always liked the look of them and found a stunning, immaculate one owner thunder grey one at a local Fiat dealer (had been chopped in on a new Punto TDi) and they had trouble shifting it on as it really didn’t go with the sort of cars they had on their forecourt.

I chopped in my 52 plate Astra 1.8 SRi (which tbh I loved) for a very good price and bought it.

I quickly came to regret doing it, the car itself was an amazing example, was only 3 years old and 22k on it, not a mark anywhere, the alloys had just been replaced 2 months beforehand under warranty (as all Jap cars around then seemed to suffer from major paint peel on them).

But it just wasn’t any easy car to get on with, very loud on the motorway (my Abarth 500 was a nicer long distance cruiser!) , sluggish around town, harsh suspension, a general lack of refinement and even though it was fun to take for a weekend blast on the A roads it didn’t make up for how it felt the rest of the time and lacked any sort of personality, I only kept it 12 months.

Maybe it was just me and what I expected of it, maybe I should have not bought a T-Sport and just got a normal one with the sport and premium packs (which is what I had been looking for, this one just appeared locally at a good price.

Here she is, I still maintain they are great looking cars (which many people don’t agree with) -

The solution is obvious then: Kei van.

Cargo room, I dont drive more than one person very often. Their comfort isnt my concern when buying a car haha.

The lack of refinement seems to be a common gripe with these. Its not a huge problem for what I want the car for, I currently drive the worlds worst e36 which has zero refinement. More worrying is the lack of character, since that’s pretty important to me. I suppose that depends on the individual and how they feel about the car though. I really just need to drive a couple.

Yeah driving one and making your own mind up is the best thing to do, my mistake I think was buying a T-Sport with 190hp VVTL-i and not the normal one with the 140hp VVT-i engine, I suspect (as I drive a 140hp one) that the T-Sport might have less sound deadening, I did consider Dynomatting it but in the end a car dealer, who specialised in sports cars, gave me 3 grand and an 04 Astra 1.8 Elite for it so I did ok (even if the Astra ended up having a few issues due to being one of the first ‘H’ models off the production line!).
