First car I drove was an 82 Rabbit, back in 82. Not the fastest thing by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a 4-speed and I loved it.

Nice! I really love these things. Never really fast, but they’re just happy and fun, even base model 1.6L 4-speeds. The GTI’s especially just have this playful puppy character that puts a smile on your face. No VW since feels as good, to me. MkIIs are close, but after that, forget it. I don’t dislike newer Golfs, they just don’t dance like these.

The Rabbit was my dad’s, but when I went to grad school I had an 88 Fox 4 speed (or was it 5? that was long time ago, and I’ve been drinking). I thought that was just about the perfect form factor, a two-door hatch with a longer back end. I put 175k on that car. Then I replaced it with a 2001 Golf 5 speed. What amazed me was how I got into that 01 an immediately knew I was in a VW. I was home. Sadly, I lost that car last year when a drunk totaled it in front of my house. When we were looking for a car for my wife, I checked out the local VW dealer. I was extremely underwhelmed. The new VWs seemed really chintzy and plastic-y. The dealer didn’t even have a single manual on the lot. I left very disappointed.

I like what you said about happy and fun. That sums up that 82 exactly. I had a lot of great times in that car, and drove it more than a few times when I probably shouldn’t have. Aw, hell, now I’m getting maudlin. I should probably go to bed. I have a rehearsal in the morning.

I’d like a rabbit truck.

Me too, they’re surprising fun, and fit 75% of my truck needs.

I’m a few beers in myself. I really like Foxes, I’d be more than happy to drive a 3-door wagon. So basic and simple, but again, just a happy little car.

I had an ‘04 GTI that my wife and I put 150k on, our first daughter came home from the hospital in it (I came home in a ‘73 Squareback, fitting). It was the best car I ever owned, if it was a 5-door I’d have kept it. I sold it to a co-worker, and it’s served him reliably but he’s beat the shit out of it. I chose it specifically for its VR6/manual/no sunroof/manual seats & climate control spec at a dealer auction, I guess that choice has been vindicated but I feel bad it’s in rough shape now, I see it every day with peeling clear coat because he’s never waxed it. I found a 5-door ‘03 Golf in the same dark blue, manual everything but with the bulletproof 2.0L four, for pretty cheap on Craigslist recently, wish I was in a position to pick that up for a daily but not yet.

I enjoy the newer GTIs but the lower trim Golfs don’t feel as special as the old ones, and they’re all so much bigger now. They’re amazing in their own way, it’s just a bit of mission creep, I guess, and the inherent “VWness” isn’t always there.

VW’s and life experience, man. It’s why I can’t bring myself to get rid of my Vanagon. We grow up with these things. Hope the rehearsal goes well.

Is that the “Macho by Leer” fiberglass bed cap? Looks like the one I had.

I see it every day with peeling clear coat because he’s never waxed it.

I had my Golf for 15 years and never waxed it once. Never had a single issue with the paint. The interior, however, was another story entirely. It went to shit. But I couldn’t have blown up that 2-point-slow engine with a stick of dynamite. I neglected the hell out of it and it just kept going.

Aw, hell, I’m getting sentimental again.

Hope the rehearsal goes well.

Thanks. I’m in Abilene this weekend for what will likely be my last show with this orchestra. I’ve been playing here for more than 20 years, but since I got the symphony and opera positions in Austin I just have too many conflicts. This weekend is a movie music pops concert, so I’ll be going out with a bang.
