I was driving when I saw someone pull over at an off-ramp, the worst sound I have ever heard resonating from their car.
I pull over to help, and they say something was wedged in the wheel. (I don’t think that is an accurate diagnosis). The owner walks over and starts the car, and all of the sudden, there it is. It sounded like hundreds of tortured souls trapped in an engine block, all of them screaming. It was a murderous sound coming from that car, and I have been trying to find out exactly what it was. I need a little help here, because I have never heard demons that bad from the engine.
Car: (2001 - 2012?) Chevrolet Malibu. (Not sure of the year exactly)
The sound started when the engine started, and seemed to correspond with the revs. Any help?

Maybe something in the AC compressor? One of my cars had the compressor bearing recently start trying to seize and it would make all kinds of terrible sounds. Honking, hissing, scraping. But it didn’t really correspond to revs. I got a shorter belt that bypassed the compressor and the car has sounded perfect since. Although I’m still trying to get the right tension on it.

Link to a video with the noise as an example? All I have heard is just small grinding noises.

I didn’t think to make a video for it. Once I figured out what even noise was coming from (and the potential consequences of the compressor seizing) my thought was just “get bypass belt ASAP”.

My guess would be a seized pulley on the accessory drive (tensioner pulley, etc)

I can’t open the video right now (baby sleeping next to me), but I had this happen recently and I was convinced that the entire engine was dying a horrible painful death. Screams and smoke from under the hood, a million idiot lights lit on the dash, and all it was, was a frozen alternator.
