What is the most harrowing bridge you’ve ever driven across?

Kinja'd!!!

This one is mine, Mosquito Rd. near Placerville, Ca. The switchback you see in the background has chassis scrapes on the inside of the corner and is followed up by three more just as severe if not more. The locals do no less than 40MPH on that road.

I never liked driving over the (old) Cooper River Bridge in Charleston. Very narrow and has quite an incline/decline. They’ve replaced it with a much nicer, modern bridge now.

It’s no big deal to drive across, but the part of the Triborough bridge that goes into Queens is the sketchiest to ride a bike over. All the other bridges in NYC have 6-8' fences on the water side, but it only has a 3'-ish railing. Heights don’t even bother me usually, but when you’re riding with the seat of your bike entirely above the handrail, that’s another story.

They only fix the Ambassador bridge when one the countries yells at them.

There was a week when the railing was fence. Like 2x4 fence. I am not shitting you. Now its been down to 3 lanes for months because they put up concrete barriers. Its only a matter of time until someone dies.

Between Detroit and Windsor just FYI

This one. It’s a one lane and you don’t really see the other side. An insane amount of Tacomas are crossing it daily.

It’s gotta be the Chicago Skyway last year while driving this:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Now, the Chicago Skyway itself isn’t all that bad. The bad part came from the fact that they had all but one lane closed on each side for construction...And the open lane was crudely drawn, varied in size, and swerved all over the place. Oh and the nice roadworkers decided to put the barrels right at the edge of their poorly painted lanes. All that on a windy bridge.

Scrapes on the bridge’s wall and destroyed barrels highlighted how many unlucky truckers couldn’t get through without carnage.

I held the wheel with a superhero grip and threaded my 55+ foot needle for like 5 miles. Got out on the other side without touching the wall or the barrels.

But oh ho ho, I couldn’t rest. On the Indiana side of the Chicago Skyway are miles and miles of expressway that not only does not have a shoulder, but has a wall that starts right on the edge of the lane. So, no pulling over and taking a breath from threading the Chicago Skyway.

Fuck the Chicago Skyway.

The Tappan Zee is first place in the “pray it doesn’t fall apart before we get to the other side”. So bad the feds fast tracked the replacement (almost done!).

Second place (was) the Pulaski Skyway before the (ongoing) rehab:

Kinja'd!!!

No shoulders, extremely narrow lanes, high speed limits, merging from a dead stop, weird exits, functionally obsolete, generally terrifying to drive when it was open.

Excluding the small toll bridge that shook my radiator out, the old Severn Bridge in a Luton box Van on a moderately windy day.

Kinja'd!!!

It doesn’t help that the roadway surface has been built up over the years, so you feel sat up really high.

The real shock is the the nearly £15 it costs me to get over...

Tappan Zee is probably mine as well. The westbound span of the new bridge is almost done though (think it is supposed to open this summer).

Not quite as pretty as the suspension bridge in your render, but I’ll take the upgrade (setting aside the stupidity of building the bridge at the widest point of the Hudson of course).

I hate the Patullo Bridge between New West and Surrey

Kinja'd!!!

Very old, narrow lanes, and undivided. Semis usually straddle both lanes, and every so often some idiot drifts into oncoming traffic and causes a huge accident that closes the bridge down.

There is something about these long, low (or on water) bridges with short guard rails that just get me a little bit. I guess I feel a little trapped and on edge from the average driver not smashing into me and knocking me off.

The old border crossing between Del Rio, TX and Cuidad Acuna, Mexico. Narrow girder bridge. If a semi was coming the other way, you backed up. It’s amazing we survived all the weekend crossings during high school.

The bridge for I-75/I-71 between Cincinnati and Kentucky. It’s always fun to cross a bridge that no one can park under due to chunks of concrete falling. If that’s not enough past repairs have been done using campaign signs and parts of old arcade game cabinets.

This disaster over the Merrimack river is literally a “temporary” bridge, not intended to be permanent, put up in 1983 and still the only avenue for crossing within a couple of miles today.
