I just realized this.

The power is out right now, & I’m bored as shit. I never realised how dependent on electronic things until the power went out.

Had a short power outage when I got up wednesday morning. First I discovered that the Wi-Fi was out, then I discovered the reason why the wi-fi was out and I still kept my calm, the prospect of the hairdryer not working and having to go to work looking like crazy cat lady from the Simpsons irked me a bit.

This is why I like having a woodstove for heat and a gas stove for cooking. At least we can still manage the basics!

What I find funny is how many times during a power outage we still hit light switches, etc. even when holding a flashlight or something.

I used to live in a house where we lost power like twice a month, year round. So we got pretty used to it, had kerosene lamps and everything.

A whole house generator has been on my list for a while. I will probably bite the bullet this summer.

Power outages are a great time to pick up a book and read.

We do have a generator, but the garage is getting a new floor poured in a few weeks. So right now its cleared out ready for the jack hammer. So the generator up the shed.

My dad has a hunt camp in north Ontario, I’m use to being with out power for a few weeks at a time. Up there there is stuff to do (split wood, collect fire wood, hunt, fish, etc), at home there is not.

Problem Solved .

In the nearly 10 years I’ve lived in Louisiana, we’ve had at least four opportunities to use our generator, twice for a week or more. We only ran it at night to cool down the refrigerator, provide a couple of lights, and power the TV and DVD player.

Nice! I actually live near a lake with lots of camps like that... fewer every year are of the “primitive” sort, but I spend some time at an island house with no power. It’s quite nice, actually. Above all, it’s quiet!

There also lots of maintenance items to do/ up grades. It could be fixing the trail, some tin siding is going up this fall, we put laminate flooring in last spring, etc.

Bummer.

I have to say that I’m jealous of your garage workspace. I dream of clearing out our garage, especially after spending time in my mom’s workshop/garage. To be honest, ours will never compare. Her’s had as much floor space as her house.

It’s double 30' wide x 40' long. with a small side garage door. Jack hammering it will be long & pain full, but it will be insulted w/ a heated floor after it’s all fixed up.

Dang. Now I’m really jealous. Mom’s is the same size. It has two rollup garage doors on the front, a single residential door on the side, a covered porch running the length of the side, it was plumbed for water and sewer in one of the back corners, and it is fully insulated. She had plans for a painting studio and a wood shop inside, leaving space to park two cars, the lawn tractor with its trailer, and lots of shelving.

After spending a week there, my wife is thinking about moving to a larger place here. (fingers crossed)
