So it’s been sitting in my driveway with around 3800 miles left on the lease. My GF owns the worlds worst Camry, a ‘96 auto I4 that has an exhaust that bounces around violently under the car at the slightest bump, a broken trans that limits it to about 60mph top speed, a rust hole behind the rear door that goes halfway across the car, and fucked up headlight wiring where they only work if the high beams are on, otherwise one is always lit unless you switch them to “on”. This car is top gear levels of bad. Since she was working from home, it was fine. She never really took it further than her parents house, 15 mins away. Now that she has a 30 minute commute, however, it’s not cutting it. So she’s using the Cruze as a commuter until the miles are almost up. Got this text this morning:

The Cruze may not be amazing, but it’s an OK basic car. Much safer for her to be driving it than her Camwreck.

I mean, it’s still not okay by new car standards, but by “it’s better than a 21 year old Camry with a blown transmission and faulty wiring that’s been totalled twice” standards, yeah it’s acceptable.

So you managed to take a car you didn’t like, but were essentially stuck with, with no use for it, and get brownie points with the girlfriend?

That’s how you make chicken soup out of chicken shit. Well done, sir.

I wouldn’t say it’s not OK by new car standards. Believe me, I am no fan of the Cruze, but they are reliable enough and functional enough that if they are used as an appliance, they are adequate enough, I’d say...?

And he’ll probably get to help her go car shopping after she can’t drive the Cruze.

True fact. I got my girlfriend into a 2013 Mazda3 hatch with the skyactiv motor when her old scion was totaled. Fun fact - slip a bit under baking in the rain and the bumper of a toyota highlander will do enough damage to a first gen tC to total it in this day and age.....I mean, she DROVE it to the police station, but whatever, the 3 kicks ass.

I would venture that a modern Cruze would still be better than a ‘96 Camry even if both were brand new, side by side. Cars have just gotten that much better/smoother/quieter. Our standards are really high now.
