Summary: A combination of a raw Easterly or ENE on shore wind, near record high lake Ontario water levels of 55cm, significant rainfall, and onshore waves of 1-2 meters will lead to beach erosion and flooding along the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Some perhaps significant. Rainfall totals of 40-70mm widespread; local amounts approaching 100mm.

Discussion: A moisture laden Texas low has already began moving into Southern Ontario. Current model guidance suggests a significant swath of rainfall stretching from SW ON through the GTA with widespread amounts of 40-70mm. Local amounts may approach the 100mm mark in a few locales. Raw easterly winds combined with an extended period of moderate (to at times heavy) rainfall, on shore waves of 1-2 meters, and the highest Lake Ontario water level since 1993 (55cm) will lead to onshore flooding and beach erosion. After this weekend Lake Ontario will likely exceed 1993 levels. This event will be significant enough to change some of the landscape around the shores of Lake Ontario. Including downed trees and washed out greenery. Especially along beaches, parks and lower terrain.

Onshore flooding discussions are Issued in advance of non-convective (thunderstorm) events that may produce heavy rainfall, beach erosion and flooding. Pay attention to our Social media feeds, Environment Canada alerts, and your local water authority for further updates. Avoid walkways and beaches in lakefront areas. Waterways and tributaries across the affected watersheds will be running high and fast. Remember turn around don’t drown!
