Kinja'd!!!

This is the car I’ll be receiving tomorrow afternoon. I will share some more things about it below.

Kinja'd!!!

It is a 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo (931).

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll be the actual Third owner of this car. My friend bought this out by Detroit Metro airport from the deceased original owner’s grandson. It has just over 55,000 original miles, and even though it’s possibly been repainted rather brilliantly, it retains it’s factory correct Dolomite Gray Metallic exterior aside from the replacement headlights.

Kinja'd!!!

Of the 11616 total 931s produced, this is one of the 5243 made for MY1980, and of the original 3440 sent to the US, this is #1027.

Kinja'd!!!

My friend has done all the service (belts, fluids, new battery, and spark plugs and wires) to the Porsche-built 2.0T motor. But it currently doesn’t run properly. It’ll sometimes start, but it doesn’t like to idle. This is one of the last few Porsches powered by the wizbang doodad magic that is Bosch K-Jetronic.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Also, prior to it being rescued, it spent it’s life outside where the original carpet became moldy. My friend removed the seats in anticipation of installing a new set. Fortunately there’s no rust in the floorpans either. There’s no rust on the body to speak of at all, good meat on the bones. The seats aren’t too shabby, with the only damage being a small tear on the drivers seat, but I don’t like the color much.

The suspension is good as well. So here’s what will be happening to the 931:

The one rust spot on the hood will be cleaned and the hood will be repainted entirely (my friend can paint really good). Chipped paint spots will be touched up as well

The engine will be sorted out and made to run right.

The floorpan will be redone and repainted with POR15 and topcoated in a color that will match the future dark blue seat covers for the seats.

The seats will be recovered to a dark navy blue.

The spare dashboard will be refurbished and recovered in a dark gray.

After this, all that’ll need to be done will be regular maintenance.

This’ll be a good change of pace. It won’t be easy, but with my Porsche friend helping me save this car, I’m sure that I’ll be able to give this car the same love and affection the 944 has had.

So I guess we’ll call this 931Lyfe.

I am very jealous. Congrats man! Hopefully, I can get my neighbors 944 eventually and live the Toyota/Porsche life.

I don’t know anything about K-Jetronic, so I had to look up what it was. Holy cow, that sure is a different animal!

Anyway, looks like a fun project there. Nice color, too!

GORIOUS!!!! Were those 928S wheels an option over there back then? It’s perfect and your plans sound great, I’d just like to add...

Swanky. I have always contended that the 924 had cleaner lines and was more as FR Porsches were meant to be.

I’ve had a 951 obsession for a long time but know precious little about the 931. A quick scan of the 924 wikipedia page shows the US-spec 931 was stuck with very restrictive emissions controls and much less power than the EU-spec, similar to what the 928 at the time.

Still, cool car though. It has...potential.

Lovely change! Sounds like it’ll be a fun project. I wish my 928 was that nice. Trust me K-Jet isn’t that hard. TFritch showed me that.

Looks like an awesome project! Cool to see another Oppo with a 924. Yours is better than mine in every way, so I’m a little jealous, but I’m excited to see what you do with it.

It was part of the M471 Sport package. Those wheels are also Fuchs as well, a forged flat-dish Fuchs according to my research. Though when everyone thinks of Fuchs, they think of the wheels in the picture you’ve shared.

Yeah, to me it’s the German equivalent of a carburetor, in that I’ve no idea how it operates and it’s magical.

Congratulations! I have always loved the idea of a slimline 924s, and more specifically the Turbo.

I still don’t get why they don’t find more love, but I am sure their time will come.

I was sorely tempted to buy a very solid one some 10 yrs ago for 2,500 euro. Silly me, I did not bite.

Looking forward to seeing how you go about recommissioning it.

Well hopefully he can lol. My 928 has been sitting for him to toy with for a while lol, but we are both admittedly much too busy to work on it.

Oh, it is haha.

Here’s my drivers seat.

Kinja'd!!!

and I just ripped the first seam in the passenger seat the other day. Made me super mad. The driver’s door panel has a 6x9 hole cut in it.

Kinja'd!!!

Hard to see, but it’s there. The passenger door had one too, but I found a replacement. It was brown, I spray dyed it black, it’s still pretty tattered at the bottom.

This was my battery tray a few weeks ago. It’s been patched and holds water out now, but it’s not what I’d call a super great repair.

Kinja'd!!!

Same story for the passenger floor.

Kinja'd!!!

The “repair”

Kinja'd!!!

There’s a few other rust areas, but none that are structural, or in dire need of attention.

The hinges on the driver door have been booger welded back on at least once, and are fatigue cracking again. 1st gear syncro is gonzo, 2nd isn’t far behind. The fuel pump relay doesn’t work, so that’s wired to a toggle. The yellow paint is a poor respray over the original silver. It’s somewhere near 180k, the odometer locked up at (1)78,000. Everything creeks and rattles. The exhaust is leaky and barely holding on. AC is disconnected (doesn’t bother me though) and the HVAC blend door is stuck on warm because the cables are broke, (again, not a huge deal). The radio is a crappy marine head unit with two Bose speakers from my ‘94 Aurora just laying in the back seat.

But! All of the lights work, it starts and runs pretty well (especially after I hot wired the cold start valve), it drives good, it was cheap, and the most important thing, I fucking love this little beater Porsche. Oh, and it’s got this bitchin rear center light.

I know, I know. The 914 double 4-spoke was a Fuchs, the W123's baroque wheels as well. And Fuchs started only because of their experience in the Panzer-market in the first place. But there’s only one wheel we Porsche owners (maybe even the entire world) think about when speaking of Fuchs wheels, right?

All I see is a yellow tank that keeps on tanking forwards after all that damage and blemishes. It’s brilliant in its own way. The fact that it’s been driven so long and kept on the road as long is testimony to its engineering and your handiwork. Good job!

Aaaaaaaaaaand I just had flashbacks to trying to understand my old Audi’s fuel system -_- ....But yours should be better laid out than the tight packaging of the I-5 so hopefully you have it up and running soon! Let me know if you need any metal parts saved from rust and corrosion. I work with metal finishing chemicals and am now making side money by repairing/restoring car and bike parts.
