Kinja'd!!!

It’s a 2005 Yamaha FJR1300 with 65k miles. Looks in pretty good shape from the photos and he has maintenance records. I’ve heard that these first gen bikes (03-05) could develop ticking exhaust valves in the first 30k miles but, assuming this one doesn’t tick, it either never did/will or was properly fixed in the past. 1k miles on the tires, comes with the hard cases and a GPS w/mount, etc. Has recently rebuilt front and rear suspension.

Seller is asking $4500. Assuming the bike rides nicely and has no tick or other problems, I’m thinking $4k is a reasonable offer. Is a first-gen FJR with 65k miles worth that? Or should I try knocking him down to 3500?

I’m not familiar with this type of crotch rocket. Seems a bit heavy. Seems reasonable.

Not really a crotch rocket, it’s a sport touring bike meant for long distances. from what I’m reading, dry weight is is ~550 lbs for a first gen, with wet weight closer to 600-640. Very light for a touring motorcycle.

I know. I was just being sarcastic. I’ve looking into those a bit.

Also due to its lighter weight, apparently the early model years were the fastest and can go toe to toe with most supersport bikes of same era in straight line speed. Not that I care too much about that, as long as she cruises along happily at 75.

Nice bike for sure.

But with 65K miles and a price of $4500, there’s other sport tourers I’d consider first........

Maybe something like this

Or actually!! Check this !! Less than 2000 miles..!

I try and not fuck with people too much on a older bikes like this because if he put the effort in to keep it running well the $500 or $1000 you don’t save can be looked at as an a future you won’t incur, for what it’s worth. However, I do nitpick on things like tires, oil change, (in your case) shaft oil for the final drive, any scratches you see, you get the picture. When bikes reach this age they are usually around the same price, give or take. This one seems like it’s priced on the upper limit of what I would spend on an old one.

Oh, by the way, I’ve ridden a second gen and I loved it. It is so comfortable and weight disappears when you are at speed. Just not my type, I’m a street bike guy.

Thank you so much for the input! I have a max spending limit of 4k so that’s as much as I can offer. I don’t think that’s a lowball, do you?

$4500 seems a bit steep with 65K on it. The extra goodies help, as do the new tires and suspension. If he’s got service history, that would be a huge plus. If so, tops I would go is $4000. If no service history, 3K or $3500 if its in really good shape.

Another thing would be to consider who is selling it. I find in the bike world, some guys just get a taste and get out, and they don’t treat the bikes well. But if its got 65K on it, I’d guess he is the type of old guy with multiple bikes. They are usually the guys to keep things well sorted.

Do you know how many owners it has had?

I usually stay away from bikes with high miles, not that high miles are necessarily bad, but there is almost always another bike, even the same type of bike, out there with much less miles, for right around the same price. I’ve been looking at Yamaha Warriors lately and I found one with 50,000 miles for $3500, or for $3800 I’ve found several around 15-20,000 miles, in just as good of shape.

+1 on the beemer, dad’s got one. Ridiculously smooth engines.

I’ve never riden one those K’s-- but they look badass and you gotta think they’re all sorts of autobahn tested...

They’re pretty heavy ~600 lbs I think. But once you get it going you would never know it.

I’ve been looking into the K1200s lately. Since there is a chance I will be moving and I really don’t want to shell out more money again to ship the st3

Ahh.. where you moving to?

And I’ve shipped bikes a couple of times before and it’s really easy.... I had my cagiva shipped all the way from Minnesota to my front door here in Colorado for $250...

That’s definitely in the ballpark for me if I was selling it.

Not that’s probably a deal breaker for you, did you know they only have 5 gears?

that’s the kicker, I don’t know yet! My Fiancee is applying to medical school, so we will end up wherever she can get in. The one time I had to ship the duc was when I moved out to cali. I think it was around $600.

The beemer is appealing only because she it starting to like to ride 2 up, and the duc is only okay at that, after I got her a backrest

Kinja'd!!! "BobintheMtns" (bobinthemtns)
05/04/2017 at 13:53, STARS: 0

That makes sense. I wouldn’t want to do 2-up on that duc either.....

What you should really do is tell her to get her own bike, then sell your duc and use it as a down payment on a desert sled.... (Saw one in the flesh last weekend... was SMITTEN!)...

haha! I’ve had that conversation with her, but she has no interest in learning whatsoever. Which sucks but at least is a little peace of mind for me.

I haven’t seen one of the sleds yet. My only complaint about the scramblers is they seem 3/4 sized. Most people I see on them look huge!

The desert sleds are much taller. They’re sick. Seriously.

I’m with you on the scramblers being kinda toy like-- But I couldn’t believe how rad the DS’s looked----

Buy it. Try to work with him on price, but if he’s firm on the price pay him and take it home. From what I’ve read and heard, FJR’s are great bikes and they won’t dissapoint you. Happy Touring!

I looked at the bike and took a short test ride including brief stint on the highway. Everything on the bike is great except that it wants to lean to the left when you let off the bars, so I think something needs to be adjusted with the front forks (which were recently rebuilt). Also the front brakes are making some noise. He said he’d take $4,000 but that was before I test rode it and discovered the leaning and brake noise. I’m gonna take the bike to a nearby shop and ask a tech there to give it a once over before committing.

The paint on the bike is truly gorgeous.

Glad it seems as-advertised! As far as the leaning left thing, there are likely too many possible things that could be causing it. Even the way you sit in the seat can have a large effect, so I wouldn’t worry about it much.

Doesn’t seem like the forums have it figured out either.

Yeah I had read into that as well. I just want to check as much as I can before I commit.

I really appreciate that it has a built in center stand, and that it uses an easily accessible canister oil filter instead of an element-in-housing.
