We all hate them, and yet chances are unless you’re rich, you’ve probably owned one, or knew some one who did. In my case both, kinda. Any way find the best, or worst looking J you can and post it. Here’s mine. I Hate it, if I saw it in real life I’d laugh, but I sorta love it too.

Yep. Had a 94 Cavalier. That thing was hilarious. So many FWD peelouts for no reason other than bad chassis performance. 80 mph felt like a million.

The only manual car I’ve recently driven was a Cavalier actually, no idea what year. One of the newer blobby ones. Comically easy clutch, refused to stall, rubbery gross shifter feel, but overall kinda fun.

My wife had a 01 for 6 years, then I had it for a few months. Those moths wee kind fun tho, I never looked forward to driving because of the car, I went driving because I was going to drive hard. I beat that car, and it took it

I’ve never driving a manual one, but I can’t imagine it’s all that great, rubble gloomy sounds like it would have been Chevy’s goal when they made it.

I’m another one who likes older J-Bodies. My first car was a ‘92 Pontiac Sunbird V6 Coupe and I dated a girl in high school that had a ‘93 Cavalier Z24 Convertible. I also briefly owned a ‘91 Sunbird V6 Convertible that oddly had a stick shift. I’d buy that car back if I could. I’d also love to own a Sunbird Turbo with a stick. Pictured is my first car.

Kinja'd!!!

Side note: I almost won a demolition derby with a ‘94 Sunbird that had the 2.0L Opel engine.

Honestly not as bad. That Sunbird was rotted so it just folded. But that little Opel engine and GM automatic tranny took a shit kicnkin’ and kept on tickin’.

Even if they were sold here - I’d never buy one.

I never had one and never will. My dad always said that it would be a mistake to get one. His family has always had trouble with the j body cars. He says they are junk and so does everyone I’ve ever talked to about them. Yet you still see them running around.

I just saw this Cavalier on Craigslist. It looks like something straight out of The Fast and the Furious , but y’know what, it actually appears to a pretty well-rounded build. The styling may not be quite my thing, but there’s plenty of Fast to make up for all that Furious . I don’t hate it.

I didn’t get a picture, but I saw a second gen Cavalier the other day for the first time since I don’t remember.

My sister bought a brand new ‘03 Cavalier for $12k out the door. It was her first car, and she had it paid off before she graduated high school. Nice car? Hell no. Dependable car? Definitely.

My first brand new car was a ‘90 Sunbird Turbo convertible with a stick. Had it for 5 years. It was a lot of fun, but had all the torque steer and went through 3 turbos and at least one head gasket in 55k.

My wife’s was her first car too. Her cousin had it, and sold it to her dad. She only paid for half of it as a graduation present. So she paid 1500 bucks for it drove it for 6 years and over 80,000 miles, then sold it for 1000 bucks,

I’ve actually been searching CL for Z24 convertibles off and on. I had a 1992 with the atrocious 3-speed Auto for a while when I was in high school and always was jealous of the Z24 5-speeds. I realize they are crap, but $2000 for a clean convertible seems to be the going rate and for nostalgia that is tempting.

Looks like I win for having owned the oldest J-body. No pics because why the fuck would I but I had a 1987 Cavalier 2.0. 4-door, automatic, nothing special whatsoever.

Being young as I was and more interested in spending my cash on VIDYA GAEMS all I did to it was slap a Flowmaster 40 on it, paint the steelies black (with chrome poverty caps and trim rings!) and replace all the interior bulbs with red-tinted ones. It was atrocious. Particularly in this color:

Kinja'd!!!

It was however immaculately reliable and only died after I sold it and the next owner put field gas in it, turning the cat to a brick. I hillhopped the ever-living fuck out of it and it just kept coming back for another beating

I like how GM just plucked an engine from the Opel lineup, stuck a Turbo on it and said “No, we don’t need to upgrade anything else. Maybe give it a bit more boost, yes”. Then ultimately as we all know, they just ate headgaskets because boost.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
05/04/2017 at 20:02, STARS: 0

Yup. Exactly that. I’m pretty sure it was an 8 valve, and certainly didn’t have an intercooler or anything else that might have helped my 22 year old idiot self get it past 50k without grenading turbos on a regular basis.

I still recall that the owners manual recommended that the car idle for 30 seconds prior to shutdown, so the turbo could spool down. I think I did that for about the first 6 months I owned it, max.

It was fun when it worked though.

They were such unreliable engines, it must be nearly impossible to find one intact now.

Kinja'd!!! "CodyVella" (codyvella)
05/04/2017 at 21:07, STARS: 1

Turbos are hard to come by now, and all the ones that do still exist are Automatics. I actually recently stumbled across a ‘89 Sunbird Turbo Sedan, but it was rough. But from ‘92-’94 the base Sunbird had the exact same engine minus the turbo. Those ones are impossible to kill. The poor Cavalier still got that garbage 2.2L pushrod GM powerplant.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
05/04/2017 at 23:20, STARS: 0

IIRC, most of the turbos were autos back then, even. There was some conventional wisdom that thought turbos were best paired with automatics around that time (why I have no idea). I liked the stick so I could keep the tach at around 2800+, no turbo lag then. :)
