Right then.

Does anyone own or have experience with a transit van? I’m looking for something that I can reasonably convert to a weekender. Given unlimited funds, I’d restore an old Westfalia and upgrade to a Suby engine and A/C...but something modern would be more practical at this point in my life.

Regardless, opinions on the van? Is just another minivan that doesn’t look half bad? Any word on reliability?

Thankx.

I don’t know which ones you mean, but I went on a 600 mile field trip in a 2016-ish passenger Transit last weekend. Really nicely packaged vehicles, you can tell they put effort into them. They had seen very little use though (3k on the clock, uni owns them) so who knows how they’ll be down the line.

I know my folks had a 3rd gen when I was but a wee lad, it carried us all over Europe, I think the only reason we had to get rid of it was because it started rusting like crazy (like all 3rd gens do apparently).

Considering they’re trusted as part of the backbone of Europe’s industry though, you can’t really go wrong!

brakes don’t last long. duel rear wheel rear brakes are a pain to do (rear axle shafts out)

Do you mean the Transit or the Transit Connect? Because the Transit is way bigger than any minivan.

The delivery company I work for has a number of Transits in the fleet, I’ve probably got a good 4,000 miles driving them. They’re easily the best handling van out there, even in high roof form it feels like a much smaller, more nimble vehicle. Power is adequate but nothing to write home about. The cabin is less spacious than that of a Sprinter in just about every metric (space between the two seats, space from seats to dashboard, etc), I think the Sprinter is slightly more comfortable as well. No one can touch the Transit’s cupholder game though. As far as reliability goes, on some of the early ones the mechanism for opening the side door from the inside broke (I think they’ve fixed this in later models). One of them also lunched it’s engine last month at about 30k miles. All in all I do like them and I’d say it would be a decent starting point. They’re so new though that I can’t imagine it being cheaper than a Westy though.
