Too nice. Troublingly nice. I feel like I’d only degrade it.

Dude: you need this. Ouch: then I saw it was Quattro... No, you don’t need this.

These old Q drivetrains are pretty bulletproof, and it has vacuum locking center and rear diffs. Wouldn’t be my first rodeo with an old quattro, there’s a reason I have a soft spot for them! In the strictest sense, no, I don’t have any need for AWD. But these things are stable as hell, and have ridiculous traction. They just feel solid. The FWD versions have a beam axle in back and don’t ride the same.

That’s hot. Would be even spicier with a set of old Porsche wheels, like the RS2
Dammit
Now you have me thinking about them

Yeah, exactly. What kind of excuses am I going to have to try to justify this with. I am selling some stuff, old parts, my current daily... but the truck transmission, damnit! Problem. And seriously, it’s too nice. I park on the street, and this is not a time in my life where I get to drive a nice car any more. I need a Camry or something, not this.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I sold the Roadmaster, I had about $3000 to purchase something fun to replace it, which I could’ve pushed to $3500. Then reality set in that the last thing I should be doing is buying another vehicle. The struggle is real!

I think I’m going to put some of that money into my truck. The driver’s side rocker panel is getting bad. Did you ever get a chance to look for a door?

I lived in Gemany and drove the Audi 100 (and the Audi 80), which was the German domestic car that was exported as the Audi 5000. But the 100 could be had much plainer than the 5000 was. In truth, I’ve never driven a Quattro and the only reason I was trolling that red one -- which looks like a beautiful specimen -- was what I assumed to be complexity in the drive train. I have a soft spot for Audi/VW cars from that era as well.

Boy, that’s attractive. I’m currently musing around for more-door dailies and that car would defeat the whole purpose of why I want one but my god it’s beautiful.

The downfall for these is other stuff, the electronic climate control, body systems, self combusting Bose amplifiers, etc. So your point is valid. These are a love/hate car for me, I’ve had an Ur-quattro and a 4000 (80) quattro, both great cars, and both simpler than this. The last 5000s here became 100s and 200s, to escape the unintended acceleration stigma, and the badges reflected the content. 100s could be had FWD, with cloth seats, and the 200s were quattros, loaded with options, and got the almighty 20 valve engine. This one’s so appealing because everything that’s usually problematic has been gone through.

The 100 I owned in Germany, a ‘78 I think, had a carbureted 4-banger and a manual transmission. I think the engine was rated at 100 PS. The first time I looked under the hood of that car, I had to stand and stare to figure out how the engine compartment was put together. The engine sitting forward of the transaxle, and longitudinal, was like nothing I’d ever seen. Nor since. Great car, though. Very basic, mine was. And comfortable.

Oh, an early one! C2 chassis, pre-quattro. 505Turbeuax here lusts for a Turbo version of those, he had one. Pretty stout machines. My first car was very nearly a first generation 80/4000 that needed a bunch of work but looked good, the seed was planted early. The old Audi engine compartment layout works very well in LeMons, actually, because the radiator is well out of harm’s way. My 4000 became a LeMons car, got 4th at Altamont in 2008 by being steady and reliable. The weight distribution isn’t ideal for handling, as you can imagine, but there are ways and driving techniques to mitigate that. They’re made that way because the front differential dictates the axle position behind the engine. Audi only recently (2008 or s0) figured out how to move their longitudinal engines back a bit with a different transaxle design that places the diff right at the back of the engine as opposed to a foot behind.

It’s really something. I need to sell my current daily to help pay for my wife’s minivan and having been thinking of 4 door alternatives, reliable cars that don’t need a lot of work that I don’t need to care about... but this defeats that whole plan.
