I’m looking at flights, and Frontier is something like $180, United is $100 more, and American is $200 more. The thing is, I’ve never even heard of Frontier, so I don’t know if it’s worth saving $100.

I’ve flown internationally a lot, but since I’ve never been west of D.C., I’ve only flown domestically once, on US Airways to Boston, and I think maybe something else that was code sharing with Lufthansa for a domestic leg.

So, how do you rank airlines?

Aeroflot > all.

I have flown on a domestic Aeroflot flight before.

Southwest, they’re the cheapest. Also is the car song tournament still a thing?

Frontier is $100 cheaper than United and you have a way lower chance of getting your ass kicked by the airline? Sounds like picking Frontier is win/win.

I’ve flown on Aeroflot to Uzbekistan. Internationally, it’s actually firmly middle of the pack, and their in-flight film selections are kind of amazing for their subcontexts (I think I watched All the President’s Men and part of JFK). But their flight attendants aren’t very personable and their food is terrible.

Short haul Aeroflot, though? That is absolutely terrifying and the flight attendants are just mean.

None of that matters though, because flying on Aeroflot means flying through Sheremetyevo, and having spent a ten hour layover there, I can tell you that it is one of the worst airports in the world. Even being one of the few that still has a smoking lounge doesn’t save it.

Yes, definitely! It’s just that I’ve actually had to work this week, so time I had hoped to devote to making fifty polls while collecting a paycheck had to be devoted to actually doing work, which sucks, so I haven’t had the chance yet.

I’ve never had anything but good experiences with Frontier. But frankly Im not super picky when it comes to any particular flight commodity so long as they serve me up the miracle of looking down on the clouds safely at near the speed of sound...and not beat me up I guess.

I rank Frontier highly. I have no idea how their pricing structure actually works because I travel as light as a human could, but the flight I had on “Fallon the Falcon” was SO MUCH BETTER than both of the Delta flights I took two months later. I’m talking, their plane was clean, roomy, AND modern?

Here’s Fallon the Falcon

Frontier is the same ownership company that used to own Spirit. IE: They are as budget as you can get. Checking a bag will be $40 if you do it online, more at the ticket counter, and if you carry that thing all the way to the gate and have to check it there because it’s too big for the overhead (which you pay for anyway) they’ll charge you even more at the gate. $60 or more perhaps? I don’t know the real rates but I’m not far off. That is called, “A bundled ticket,” In contrast to that, with all their fees, their cheap as hell ticket might be equal or more than the price of a legacy airline’s ticket. So do the math.

Point is, look at ALL the fees you will be using. Their tray tables aren’t large enough to use an 11" laptop on (only enough space to hold a soda can and a cup of ice ) and speaking of that soda can, yeah they charge you $2 for a can of coke. They even charge for water bottles on shorter flights. So look carefully at what you really need in an airline. If you pack lightly and don’t need much on a flight, they could very well be cheaper than anything else because they are counting on your upselling needs.

Now, their route structure and basing structure of operations is lacking greatly. They oversell as well and when the weather gets nasty out there and your flight is cancelled, they don’t have the resources of multiple maintenance bases and crew bases like the major players do to find a spare plane or free up time on another plane and find some reserve crews like United/Delta/American or especially Southwest can to get you out of where you are.

The weather went bad and my sister and family canceled out of Florida on a Sunday. Frontier couldn’t get them home for 5 days but could get there somewhere else where they would have to rent a car on their own dime in 3 days. Weather is your concern and not theirs. Anything weather related happens and they don’t have to do anything to help.

So, rank the airline based on their ability to handle bad weather, have a fair ticket price for what you’re looking to do.

*I’m biased in favor of the LUVely airline I work for but the above factors are actually very accurate. We should enjoy our travel, shouldn’t we?

Frontier is relatively bigish out west. Bottom rung, there is a reason why they are cheaper. Think Spirit.

I have no experience with Frontier. I live in the home base of American and Southwest. Which is cheaper depends on if I choose to fly on a high volume route for that carrier. I find Southwest staff are a bit nicer than at American, but I’ll just go with the cheapest US domestic carrier for the flight I want.

Delta, United, American are basically equivalent in their level of irritation with things like stupid fees, likelihood of delays, dumb boarding procedures that value creating multiple levels of priority boarding as perks for frequent flier and airline credit card customers over efficiency, shitty small seats, and asshole employees.

Delta at least is outfitting most of their planes with seat back video screens but I bring my tablet for movies anyway.

Southwest evens the playing field with no bag fees or stupid extra leg room fees, more flexibility with changing of flights, and not-assigned seating. Their employees seem to not be dicks, mostly. Unfortunately they switched all their 737s from 5-across to 6-across seating like everybody else.

Frontier and Spirit nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING.

American, United, and Delta are all kinda the same, just throw a dart and pick which one suits your fancy. Southwest isn’t bad, though I haven’t flown with them in over a decade so YMMV.

My experience with Frontier has been good - yes they are a budget carrier so they charge extra for stuff - but if you don’t need a lot of stuff it’s fine and I haven’t had any issues with them. I would pick them over United any day, American most days. I prefer Delta and Alaska if either are available.

I admittedly have very low expectations, even internationally. I’m completely happy flying on something like EasyJet or Aer Lingus. I just don’t want to be bumped or have my little personal bag taken away because they let some fuck ups carry on a jet ski and a piano.

I fly domestically all the time. Frontier sucks in the same ways most airlines suck but it’s certainly no worse than United or American. I’d say it’s definitely worth the savings.

It’s only going to be a four day trip at most, so I’ll probably use a bag that I usually get away with as a personal under-seat bag on international flights.

I would have thought the FSB was too busy interfering with the French elections to be out here manipulating informal polls about airlines.

6. All the rest

I’m very loyal to AA, but it mostly because I think DFW is the easiest airport to connect at. But they tend to have better service and planes than the competition. I’ve paid more money to fly AA on many occasions. Of course, there’s a point when either the schedule or price difference puts me on other airlines, but I always look at AA first.

We used frontier for our family trip to Disney from Detroit. Was a good experience. As long as you factor the extras, you’re good to go, and you save a few bucks if you prepay for checking or carry ons, but nice flight for us and the people we’re decent to deal with.
