So I had an 8th grade boy who I told to wait until Security to arrive because 8th grade boy. He jumped out the window. The window is six feet off the floor and 7 or 8 feet off the ground. That is all.

Is that a school or a prison?

That’s pretty par for the course. We had kids leave my junior high school all the time through the window.

Years ago a bunch of us were playing touch football in the parking lot of a fast food joint where a friend was closing. One friend didn’t want to get tagged so he jumped over a little two foot high retaining wall. What he failed to realize was that the ground was about 18 feet down and there were some trees in the way.

We had to walk about a quarter mile down the road to get access to this area, parallel to the freeway onramp, so we could extract our brilliant friend from the tree and drag him back to safety. We were all probably in our late teens/early twenties, so it just goes to show that sometimes we don’t outgrow 8th grade thinking (or lack thereof...)

No broken limbs? No leaks? All’s well that ends well.

In 8 years and 4 different schools, I’ve never had a classroom with windows.

When I was in middle school, one of my friends had a Casio universal remote watch.

Kinja'd!!!

When our teacher would play us VHS tapes that weren’t going to last the whole class, I’d use the remote to keep turning the tv off or otherwise mess with the video on the sly, just to extend the amount of video time before we had to go back to class.

I did the same basic thing in 9th grade in my intro to programming class. That computer lab was these old IBM PS/1 workstations networked to an old server, and there was no security. In 1996 this was already ancient stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

We accessed the compiler program we used to write our code for class, by typing in a command to run a batch file which then loaded up the compiler stored on the server.

I figured out how to access the files on the server and would occasionally delete that batch file. The teacher never figured out why the program wouldn’t work for us because all the compiler files were still there, and we’d get a bunch of free time until she re-wrote the batch file.

Only problem with that one was this other kid who wasn’t quite smart enough saw what I was doing and decided he was going to try and repeat my trick by deleting the compiler itself. The teacher definitely noticed that .

The only broken limbs were on the tree, and that’s probably what saved him from serious injury. He was a little scraped up, but surprisingly intact.

I played at an elementary school today, and we had to have our ID scanned (standard) then we had to sign in, then we were escorted to the lunchroom—across the hall. It felt like we were trying to visit a con at Gatesville.

I was in college finishing my math degree when the OJ Simpson trial was under way, and in my late 20s. Dozens of people were hanging out in the Student Union watching the trial and you couldn’t have torn them away with a bulldozer. I went to Kmart and bought a universal remote and my friends and I took turns walking through the TV room of the Student Union and turning off the television.

It’s not that bad. I’ve worked at MUCH worse. That’s also the backside of the building. The back of that classroom, if I am to return to it next Fall, I will paint this Summer. But it’s kind of tattered. Which is good because if I want to make holes in the walls, nobody notices.

Wow. That’s a new one.

I’d love to see a kid try that in my room. They’d drop about 12' down into a fenced in area around the cafeteria vent hood.
