Kinja'd!!!

This is what I started using recently... an HP C3758A keyboard that came with a retro PC I bought a few months ago. These only came with HP Vectra PCs which were HP’s business line of desktops in the 90s (similar to Dell Optiplex).

It is rubber dome, but... it is the most mechanical feeling rubber dome I’ve ever used and it is not loud at all. Has a nice weight and feel to the keys without being too clacky or hard to press. What do you guys use?

Both work and home. The mice have a crappy rubber coating that doesn’t stand up to life, though.

I am not happy with how tall/upright it is, either. My strong preference is for very low-profile flat keyboards with very light resistance and extremely low key travel distance. We’re talking most integrated laptop keyboards are annoying for me. I also like the keys 50-70% of standard size keys. All this reduces strain and increased my typing speed.

I am a fast typer on basically any keyboard and still have yet to figure out why people get all enthusiastic about keyboards and their feels and switches and whatnot. Basically any random keyboard that comes with a computer is totally fine for me to bang out my usual 85 wpm or so. Just don’t give me one of those damned Microsoft split keyboards because I’m not evenly balanced with my typing. My right hand reaches over to some of the keys on the left side of the keyboard so those screw me up.

I use this old 486-era Compaq RT-101 on my Windows 10 desktop - I got for free and use it through a cheap Amazon USB-PS2 adapter as my desktop doesn’t have PS2 ports :P

Modded it with superbright LEDs back in 2006-2007 or so when that was a craze. My friends always pick on me at LAN parties as it’s so loud. Also, look ma, no Windows key! :D Similar to yours, it is rubber dome, but is a VERY mechanical-feeling rubber dome setup! Maybe early rubber-domes often felt somewhat similar?

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I also use this equally ancient keyboard from a 386 or 286 on my spare Intel Core 2 desktop. It does have a PS2 keyboard/mouse port so I removed the ancient connector from it and grafted on a PS2 connector from an old PS2 Ball mouse (the wiring is the same as PS2, just that the plug is different) - also modded it with superbright white LEDs. Has a VERY unique feeling to it (one of the first rubber dome keyboards) and also has no Windows key, but the Macro key on the lower left functions as a forward slash! :P

Same one I’ve been using for over a decade. With a Kensington Expert Mouse multi-button trackball. The extra scroll wheel on the left is the greatest feature ever.

I do have a Model M or two around here, but I like the convenience of being able to take a wireless keyboard off the desk quickly to free up some space. That, and the weight is a little more reasonable.

My Model M has been customised a little bit, with a bracket that lets me tilt it up 90 degrees to get it out of the way. The other mod is a replacement for the ESC key that is bright red and reads ‘PANIC’.

Yup! That’s an old pic of the RT-101, but I’ve used it every single day daily since 2004 (I’ve used it on three computers now) and it still works perfectly....it’s faded to that familiar beige, it’s quite grotty at the moment (I really have to clean it), but it never skips a beat!

As for the other one with the Macro key (no idea what make or model it is!), it’s one of the most unique feeling keyboards to type on I’ve ever used....the keypresses are deceivingly light. My only issue with that one is one of my own making as the replacement PS2 mouse cable I grafted on is way too short...had to buy one of those PS2 extension cables for it :/

Hells yeah! Using the computers at work, with conventional mice, just feels like a step backwards. Like my modified Model M, I’ve modified this trackball with a heavier weight ball, in this case an actual 8-ball picked up from a billiards supply store.

I keep a few of these around for spares. I know them inside and out, and can get them up and running in no time if problems arise (usually fuzz/dust blocking the optics). The only irreparable problem I’ve encountered was when some of the markings on the rollers, as used by the optical sensors, started to wear off, making the motion inconsistent.

I know you won’t like this, but I use the new Mac keyboards, and I like them so much more than the old mechanicals or anything else since. Only thing is I miss having a number pad when I have to put in data on spread sheets.

I hate hate hate when I have to use generic Dell keyboards at public stations around our school.

A WASD keyboard, basically this (with a numpad):

Too expensive, but very nice.

Standard Apple extended chiclet keyboard. Very nice action, minimum key travel, very quiet. I like it.
