Final for my Materials and Processes I class at Appalachian State University as part of my Industrial Design Major. Netik is a coffee table designed with everyday use in mind. The edge of the trays are raised to prevent liquids from spilling off to the floor or other trays with books or computers on them. The trays are also magNETIKly attached so as to be easily rearranged to better suit your needs or to be removed for eating/ loading.

Construction is out of solid maple with neodymium magnets holding the surface to the frame. Some further explanation of the concept:

I forgot to reply to your first post about this but I love this goddamn thing.

The only problem is I like nice furniture but hate spending money on even cheap not-nice furniture. I’m like,

“Wait, this thing is how much? I could get a Pure Stage 2 turbo for that!”

Maybe I need to grow up.

Wild! I’ve never seen anything like it. Cool design with legit functionality.

Very, very nice. I see potential idiot-bait in that somebody will have their magazines in the same “pan” as their coffee and will marinate their magazine nicely when there’s a spill, but I’m not sure that’s a problem that can or should be solved.

Feels like a lot of wasted space for my taste. The modular design is interesting, but I think I’d prefer rectangular trays that filled the entire space (and maybe also a on a base that had some storage.)

Wow I really like the design of the table. I don’t know if being modular really adds much for someone like me, I just like modern design that isn’t ugly.

I am curious how stable are the trays? If you flopped a bunch of books on the edge would they come unhinged and flip over?

That looks awesome.

Is strong magnets messing up computers still a thing? Only drawback that I can think of.

Neodymium magnets are super strong.

As an example, here are two Dayton Audio 7” woofers.

This one has a conventional ferrite magnet.

This one has a neodymium magnet.

Even though the neodymium magnet is much smaller, it’s just as, if not more, powerful.

Thanks, the modular thing was more of an accident than anything. Doesn’t really serve a purpose.

They are pretty solid. I did some Nalgene throw tests and it would shift a little and go back. I have plans to change the magnet mechanism to make things a little more solid.

Thank you!

I thought of that and it really only affects older computers with older hard drives. It’s more the magnets affect the moving parts. I’ve put a few laptops and phones on the table and have seen no ill effects.

Neat. With a few changes to proportions, you could have a more functional version of this:

I like the modular design, and to some degree I agree about the wasted space thing. BUT being able to swap the tops would be great for things like parties. You could have your normal everyday tabletop that gets beat to hell and back, then a nice one for parties / gatherings. Or a round one, or a bigger one, or a smaller one. Just being able to have size and shape options would be great. Kind of like leaf sections of a dinning-room table. Sometimes the option is nice.

My new Eames book would look great on it. (And it would look great in my living room)

Again, great job.
