Kinja'd!!!

The gas station in my neighborhood inexplicably has weird and amazing cars at it all the time. Today, I was finally in a position to snap a picture.

The owner was there to meet someone to sell a bunch of camera gear to. Inexplicably, I had enough cash on hand offer more than the buyer was paying. But I left well enough alone.

The owner did tell me to never, under any circumstances, buy one of these 8 series BMWs. He said it’s a nightmare, but he loves it.

Does anyone know how many of these made it to the U.S.? I think they produced around 30,000 of them.

The last two times I’ve biked past a local BMW repair shop there’s been an 850 there. There was a week or two between times I passed it, so not sure if it was on the same visit.

Back when I worked in a ritzy area of an otherwise run-down city, there was a nearby gas station just like you described. I’d see brand new 911s, American iron, and random old beaters from the 70s and 80s. It’s about the only thing I miss from that area.

Is that a wrap or flat paint job? or just an illusion from the pic?

Just over 7200 to the North American market.

The 8 series is a funny car, it doesn’t matter what drivetrain you have, it’s trouble. The R129 (kind of, sort of competitor) had straight 6 motors that left a lot to be desired, but the V8s and V12s are amazing motors still today. They are not slow cars by any means either. The 8 series, the V8 leaks, the V12 leaks. The M70 was anemic at best, while the S70 was a very respectable motor which even came with a manual trans, something the R129 didn’t offer with the V8s or V12s.

The 8 series platform is such a tough sell, but I love them too. I wouldn’t run out and buy one because I don’t think they’re a good investment, and I don’t think there will be a good enough return on them once you sink enough coin into it to consider one road worthy and “problem free.”

If you are truly hellbent on an 8 series, hold out for a BMW Motorsports Edition, should say so on the door handles. They were towards the end of the production run. A little more unique, and maybe worth the investment, but it’s tough to say still. I’m not hedging any bets on the 8 series cars retaining or going up in value any time soon.

Looked like flat paint up close, though it did look a little weird.

I live in a very nice area, lots of money being thrown around on cars. And this gas station is the first one for the folks who drive out from the even nicer neighborhood, I mean island, when they have to go anywhere. So it’s get all sorts of awesome at it. And then there’s my Ranger, keeping it real.

Here’s a cool chart. http://www.e31.net/production.html

My 540i shares the M62TUB44 with the later production 840ci, its currently apart in my garage. Either the guides shattered and then the tensioner happened to fail or the tensioner failed and the guides broke because of it. Looks like I got lucky and even though timing is off I don’t have any bent valves.

I can’t bring myself to get rid of it though so I’m just sinking $$$ into it.

the 850s are notoriously unreliable and terrible power for a V12, something like 300hp somethere around that. But i would still buy one just for the V12 and maybe some straight pipes.
