Kinja'd!!!

Just when you thought Acura was finally getting its balls back what with the NSX and the 2018 TLX and its A Spec package, they go and drop this bombshell. Trying to cash in on the small luxury crossover game that they would play with others such as the GLA, weird Infiniti QX30 and Buick Encore, someone thought it would be a good idea to bring over the CDX, which currently is only sold in China. What is the CDX you ask? If your answer is a Honda HR-V in nice clothes you are exactly right because that’s all it really is. Speaking to Wards Auto Acura group VP Jon Ikeda said “It’s a model that interests a lot of our people, so we have our R&D guys looking into the possibility.” Just..no. Don’t listen to your soccer mom and senior customers. And no don’t come with the “ sales of crossovers help fund the development of the fun stuff” argument because outside of the unattainable for most of us NSX, Acura has nothing fun (the TLX A Spec remains to be seen). This would just be another entry into an every crowded crossover market.

I like the headlights. But there’s too much HR-V in it to be taken seriously to me. Especially in the side.

“Acura has nothing fun”

Indeed they don’t, so what difference does it make? They’re fools if they don’t bring it over. I won’t be visiting an Acura dealer either way.

I’m fine with this. The HR-V is very smartly packaged with tons of rear leg room, but even in its top trim has a dinky motor and no power seats. The CDX has the 1.5 turbo, what appears to be a nice interior, and crossovers sell. It’s certainly an upgrade over the stupid ILX that I can’t believe Acura is still selling.

I’ve read complaints about the HR-V being cramped, uncomfortable and too slow. Those things don’t translate well to luxury crossover buyers. And with the ILX being not as good as it is and pretty much a last gen Civic, I don’t know how I feel about another Honda turning into an Acura.

If they put the civic si turbo 4 (or preferably type R) engine with a performance tuned AWD system in it, could be a fun little car. Never going to happen but a slick Honda manual and a lowered suspension would complete the package.

Cramped? It has tons of room, especially for its size. The only complaint I have about the HR-V is the engine. It needs the 1.5 turbo.

I test drove an HR-V a year ago when I was shopping for my wife’s car. It has tons of head room and the rear leg room is crazy good. I’m 5'11" and with the driver’s seat set for me, I could get in back and there was loads of leg room, better than many big cars.

The HR-V has the 141 hp 1.8 liter NA motor from the previous Civic. The CDX has the 1.5 turbo from the current Civic and CR-V, tuned to 185 ps in China. Conceivably Acura in the US could use the same 205 hp tune as the Civic Si.

And well, most Acuras have Honda siblings.

A business needs to follow the money. If it brings in sales, they’d be stupid not to do it.

And the same seniors that buy the Encore in droves. It seems to be predominantly selling to the same blue-haired crowd who liked the Enclave but were only carrying around two people and a yappy dog.

I was actually interested in the HR-V when it came out. My girlfriend didn’t like it. She remarked that it was way smaller than her cousins CR-V which she loves. It was painfully slow though. Hopefully if this does come it gets a decent engine option and some power like you mentioned.

True. But just because they do do it doesn’t mean it will work for them. The crossover market is crowded as it is. Simply offering yet another choice in a sea of choices isn’t enough. This has to come with something that sets it apart. SH-AWD would help.

Have you seen the Lexus NX sales figures? That’s why they want to bring it here.

I see more seniors in Lexus, at least around here. I don’t think Acura would exist today without affluent mom-aged women flocking to their CUVs. I think it is seen as a sporty alternative to Lexus, but not as brash and costly as the Germans.

They need to do it, the whole market is quickly transitioning to crossovers and Acura’s sedans just aren’t performing well.

Yea seniors flock to their RX’s,LS’ and ES’s. But I think Acura was seen as an sporty alternative to Lexus with Honda reliability. But the redesigns and model changes in recent years changed perceptions. The RDX for instance used to be a sporty small turbocharged crossover. Its redesign. made it just another bland crossover. Stuff changed with them and not for the better. There’s a reason you dont hear RLX mentioned along with the LS, 7 Series etc. Or the TLX mentioned with the 5 Series etc.

And I suspect becoming bigger, heavier, and more boring, hasn’t hurt sales, although it definitely has hurt brand relevance in the eyes of enthusiasts. But if the money comes in, that’s what matters.

RLX is an odd thing, I call it a 4:3 Accord at 2:1 the price. Maybe a good used deal. None of them are even compared with Lexus, not to mention the Germans.

If they plan to bring it to the US luxury market they’d better at least put the 1.5 turbo motor in it. The HR-V has the Fits 1.5 engine and its kinda whimpy in a FWD hatchback.

But if they go through the effort to do that maybe they’d let it trickle down and put the 1.5 turbo in the Fit and we’ll finally get the Fit Si we’ve been asking for the last 12 years.

As I mentioned in my comment my first thought was that if they want it to be competitive as a luxury car it’ll need more power. I think with the 1.5 turbo it’ll sell like hot cakes.

The CDX comes with the 1.5 turbo in China right now. Stands to reason it’ll get the 1.5 turbo here too.
