I posted about the weird brake issue Meepster was displaying.

Rotors need to be turned. I’ve brought up this issue at every oil change since I noticed it last July. They’re claiming it’s typical (25k miles? I’ve never seen that kind of interval).

*EDIT*

Service advisor just dropped in and said “oh yeah there was a recall on the brake pads. They were too hard and chewing up rotors on almost all of the early Renegades. It’s a whole new part number.”

So I’m getting all new pads and rotors.

My out of pocket is $0

Nice! IIRC, Toyota had a similar recall on the Rav. Pad material was determined defective, service campaign was new brakes. Sometimes recalls aren’t always bad!

My guess is the rotors are actually too soft, but that is a much more expensive fix than just putting new pads on the trucks that haven’t chewed up their rotors yet. Or maybe the Renegades have some sort of custom pad compound, thus explaining the ability to stoppie.

SUBJECT:

Front Brake Squeak/Squeal Noise

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves cleaning excessive sealant from the front brake caliper adaptor brackets and replacing the adaptor bracket mounting bolts and/or replacing the front brake pads and related hardware.

MODELS:

2015 - **2017** (BU) Jeep Renegade

2016 - **2017** (FB) Fiat 500X

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries:

NAFTA

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before November 11, 2016 (MDH 1111XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may describe one or more of the front brake squeak/squeal noise

symptoms/conditions:

· Squeak/squeal noise during moderate brake apply combined with light steering. The noise typically occurs with warm brakes after several brake applications.

· Squeak/squeal noise during low speed brake apply with vehicle moving forward or reverse. The noise typically only occurs after the vehicle sits overnight in colder ambient temperatures and the noise will go away after a few brake applications.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the customer describes the symptom/condition listed above, perform the Repair Procedure.

I’m surprised FCA even issues TSBs for squeaks, rattles, and screeches anymore. They replaced something in the front struts of my Abarth twice and it still made noise. I didn’t feel like taking it back again and chalked it up to it being cheap.

My 2010 SX4 had a similar rear pad rotor problem. One day my brake light came on at 40 000 Kms so I checked my fronts and they had 80% left. Then I checked the rears and had no pads left, I was metal on metal.

I didn’t even have traction control on my sx4.
