Kinja'd!!!

Any recommendations on a good quality, yet not too crazy expensive one? I don’t really have room in my garage for an air compressor, so I was looking into a cordless impact wrench. I have no clue about them though. So, educate me Oppo!

I use 18 volt dewalt stuff. They don’t have a ton of power for breaking free lug nuts after a rusty winter, but the 1/4" drive one packs a surprisingly good punch. I think everything is up to lithium 20 volt now, but it should be similar.

If you can deal with a cord, a good corded electric impact will run you less than a good cordless. Now, if you already have a battery set up for one of the major brands (Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc)...then the cordless will be a good value.

I’ve had an electric Milwaukee impact for about 7 years now and it’s great. I have a retractable extension cord hanging in the center of my garage. I can pull it out and get to any vehicle easily. That said, I still wouldn’t mind a cordless, either!

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet (no pun intended), but I’ve been looking at Milwaukee for my upcoming cordless tool collection upgrade (getting tired of my Ryobi stuff). Milwaukee’s batteries are supposedly a bit better than the rest, which is one of the main reasons I’ve got my eye on them. Not cheap, though.

I’ve had great experiences with the Ryobi ONE stuff the 1/4" impact that came with this kit ( http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-ONE-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Ultimate-Combo-Kit-6-Tool-P884/203466936 ) It has handled everything I’ve asked it to do. and I got the whole thing on sale for $229!!

They also have a more powerful 1/2" version too. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-ONE-18-Volt-3-Speed-Lithium-Ion-1-2-in-Cordless-Impact-Wrench-Kit-P1830/206157712

I don’t know that these are “professional tools,” but for the weekend wrencher/handyman like myself. I think these are a great bang for your buck and the batteries work with tons of other stuff, so that can be useful as well.

Do you have a Marshall E Campbell near you? They run sales through milwaukee once in a while where they give 100$ trade in for a drill and 2 batteries even if they don’t work.

The milwaukee stuff is nice.

Have any existing cordless tools? I’d just say go with whatever takes the same batteries. One less oddball to keep track of and this allows you to purchase a “tool only” as opposed to a kit (tool + charger + battery) which is usually much more spendy.

I own five cars and I rotate the tires diligently every 5,000 miles. I have a DeWalt electric impact wrench that I “acquired” from my brother-in-law. It’s not worth the hassle. I stick with a breaker bar and a speed wrench.

What do you define as crazy expensive?

http://www.murdochs.com/shop/dewalt-20v-max-xr-brushless-high-torque-1-2-impact-wrench-w-detent-pin-anvil-tool-only-dcf899b/

Because this thing is worth it. I’m sure you can find a sale at your local Home Depot or something. 1200 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque. It will make any and all jobs a cinch.

You can find the older model for cheaper, of course, that still uses the same 20V batteries. If you want to further the savings, often there are sales where you get the regular drill driver and a battery for less than $100. Here’s one for $100 that’s the drill and two batteries:

https://www.amazon.com/Dewalt-DCD771C2-Cordless-Lithium-Ion-Compact/dp/B00ET5VMTU

DeWalt makes good stuff.

I’ve been using a Craftsman 1/2 drive with the Lithium Ion batteries (2) and a wall charger and it is fantastic. Enough power but it’s no ingersoll rand air powered stud breaker... still might want a breaker bar to loosen up 1-1/8" F350 dually lug nuts but it works fine for most.

I have a Bosch that is ok for most things, lug nuts not being one of them.

I also have an older Dewalt that still packs a punch. It almost 7-9 years old? It’s a bigger SOB, but at the time was $300.

I have all Bosch cordless stuff and the larger impact may be better, but not enough to spend my own money for.

If I was to off-road I’d likely take both Bosch & dewalt one I got.

That thing attached to your shoulder, that’s the cordless impact wrench. Plus a 2 foot breaker bar and there’s your torque! I really do not like the cordless electric kind. I imagine there are corded electric ones that could work better if this is in your garage.

I actually have that exact drill you posted, hahaha. Yeah, DeWalt definitely makes some great stuff. The impact wrench is what I’m after though, mainly for removing / replacing lug nuts. I have a few tire rotations and brake jobs coming on with the family fleet, so I figured now would be a good time to invest in something like that. $229 is on the low end of the ones I’ve seen. Thanks for that link. One article I was reading had most listed between $330 and $400, which I thought was a bit ridiculous.

All my stuff up until this point (all around-the-house type power tools) has been DeWalt. For this purpose, I’m looking for something more powerful for doing exactly what you mentioned: breaking free lug nuts. So 1/2" impact driver is mainly what I’m looking for.

DeWalt is all I’ve bought so far, and haven’t had any issues. But I only have a standard cordless drill and reciprocating saw, so I wasn’t sure how they held up for jobs that needed a little more torque, hahaha.

I’m going to second the Harbor Freight option. I couldn’t live (long) without my DeWalt 20v drill, but for tools that only see light of day a few times a year I have no problem going cheap. I have a HF angle grinder, sawzall , circular saw, and hammer drill that only get limited use, and they’re all many years old. Hand tools and everyday electrics are, as I said, a different matter.

Just my limited perspective!

I hate Home Depot. Every time I walk in there, the general feeling of the store is one of depression and despair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happy person inside a Home Depot. If I ever have to go to a big box home improvement store, I go to Lowes. Generally though, I try to stick with my trusty locally owned hardware store though as much as can. They always do right by me.

I could deal with corded one. But I kinda want something I can take with me and use wherever. For example, my brother has a 2nd floor apartment and is getting new rims soon. No combo of my extension cords is gonna reach from his window to the parking lot. And instead of playing musical cars in my driveway to get his car close enough to the garage for my extension cords to reach, it’d be much easier to have a cordless wrench and just go swap the wheels in the parking lot of his complex. I don’t mind paying a little bit more for that luxury. At least that’ what I’m telling myself at the moment...

Just keep in mind that the $229 price does not include a battery - which is why I suggested the drill pack with two (albeit smaller) batteries for $100. But if you already have batteries and a charger, then it shouldn’t be a problem. $330 seems about right if they include one of the 5Ahr batteries. But I use the smaller ones that I got with my drill on the impact all the time.

Well, it’s a stock photo I found on Google, so there’s no telling if it actually did, or if the photo is just staged, lol.

And I’d prefer to buy new since there’s no telling what kind of item you’re gonna get from ebay. I know some great deals can be had, but I’d prefer to be the first person to beat the shit out of it, hahaha.

Oh, I missed the part of it not having a battery. Hmmm. The two batteries I have for my drill seem to die pretty quickly for things that require a lot of torque (drilling holes to kill tree stumps, for example). The 5Ahr battery might be worth the extra cost so I don’t have to worry about it dying quickly.

Not sure. Home Depot squeezes it’s suppliers so tight (tight and tighter each year), they have to reduce costs to stay on the shelf.

If you don’t buy from them,it will probably be more expensive, but will be much better.

Its definitely rough on the wallet if you aren’t already bought into the m18 batteries. I already had bought in when I got mine and looked at as I could spend 200 on a good air impact or 200 on this one that out preforms the air in every category. No brainer for me.

The batteries are what I think are the deciding factor here. I already have two DeWalts (standard drill and reciprocating saw) so I leaning more that direction. But the Milwaukee is also high on my list. I’d just have to fork out more for batteries. Decision decisions....

No problem. It just makes sense when they’re all good, to stick with the system you already have. Having one charger in the house and one in the garage, for example, makes life simpler. As does being able to grab a battery from another tools when you’r almost done with a job and want to get on with it.
