Kinja'd!!!

Go get a lifeproof (or equivalent) case immediately. My daughter broke her phone in a spectacular way. She slipped on the stairs and smashed the corner of the phone into the railing trying to catch herself. No worries, she wasn’t hurt, but the phone is toast. The cute case she bought for it did nothing to protect it.

We thought everything would be covered by the insurance we bought with the phone. So, we went down to Verizon and filed a claim. That’s when we were told that we may or may not get a replacement phone. These are on backorder and the third-party insurance company doesn’t know when they might get new ones. We asked for an equivalent phone. They don’t have any of those either. We asked for the local store to give us a replacement from their stock. They told us they weren’t allowed to do that any more. The local store rep finally suggested we talk to the guy next door that does phone repairs.

The guy next door made the classic “this is gonna hurt” face when he saw her phone. Because of the relatively low production numbers and the fragile nature of the wraparound glass, replacement screens are $260 + installation. That’s nearly twice the insurance deductible. Ouch.

When (if) we receive a replacement phone, the first order of business is a bomb-proof bubble-wrap case that is impervious to small nuclear detonations. Yeah, that ought to do it.

I’ve got an Otterbox on mine. Pretty solid, no damage to the phone yet. I also have an S7, so I don’t know if they make one for the Edge.

This is why I hate insurance companies (and warranties for that matter). Aside from being society’s fun police, they are naturally incentivized to provide shit customer service and fuck you over at every chance they get.

You bought insurance so that you could get your phone fixed or replaced. If you bring them a broken phone and they do nothing, what the hell did you pay them for?

A friend has an S7 Edge that broke in her pocket. My regular S7 is in perfect shape, I’ve had it for exactly 365 days and have never taken the cheap Amazon case off.

I have an S6 and I haven’t cracked it, even with a thin case. It’s so expensive because the glass is bonded to the LCD and you have to take the battery and logic board out to replace it if I’m not mistaken.

it hurts me when ever I see a smart phone with out a case, or a cheap useless case.. Must be nice to walk around with out worry that your $600+ device means nothing to you if broke, no sorry, when it breaks..

i feel like a defender case would block the actual edge fetures of the s7 edge, it looks like the lip would keep you from seeing edge notifications. but i could be wrong

Is that an S6 Edge? I wondered about that curved screen’s repairability.

Lmao, my nephew can’t stand that I beat the shit out of my iphone 6. I’ve actually dropped it in such a way that when it landed the screen popped out from the frame. Just pushed it back in. I’ve even used it in the shower. I have the tempered glass screen protector but thats it, 2 years and its fine still.

I’m in the no case camp. I’ve never used a case and never broken a screen through the 5 odd smartphones I’ve owned. The only mishap I’ve had is when a large branch fell on me when mowing the yard and laded directly on the screen of the phone while it was in my pocket. Didn’t break the glass, but there was about a half-inch tall section of the screen that no longer responded to touch. So a case wouldn’t have helped in that scenario either.

On the other hand, I’m still on a grandfathered Verizon unlimited plan, so I don’t upgrade to the latest and greatest anyway. I just buy older refurbs off eBay every couple years. The most I’ve spent on a phone is the $200 Note 4 I’ve had for about a year now, so I don’t have the $600+ burden that others have.

Insurance is a socially accepted scam.

Mafia walks into a restaurant and says,

“This is a nice restaurant you have here. Lots of stoves and ovens and whatnot. It’d be a shame if you had a fire.”

Insurance company says,

“This is a nice car/house/health/life you have here. Lots of things to go wrong with it though. Better give me money in case one of those things happens, and if it does, I’ll give you money.”

The only difference is you’re paying the mafia to not light your restaurant on fire themselves, and they don’t give you anything if it catches fire for some order reason.

Lost my phone in the mosh pit at the Anthrax/Killswitch Engage show a few weeks ago. Three hundred pairs of feet stomping around like maniacs. Found it two songs later, completely intact. Otter Box for the win!

This is the downside of super fancy phones. They’re difficult to repair and very expensive to replace. I’m actually kind of amazed with how popular the latest greatest phones still are even though there’s plenty of cheap unlocked phones available that suit most everyone’s needs without having to do some goofy carrier payment plan and insurance. The Moto G5 Plus is $229 and could easily last most people at least a couple years or longer. And if you break it, a whole new one is $229.

The cute case she bought for it did nothing to protect it.

Which is exactly why I dictate the kind of case my boys can have on their phone. I tell them, “As long as I’m paying for it, you have the case I choose.”

In all fairness, the insurance company payout from my first wreck covered all of my premiums for the next 20 or so years.

Cell phone insurance, however, appears to be a scam.

Yeah - Story checks out. I have an S7 Edge too. Dropped it on the top right corner during a bachelor party two weekends ago (hur durr Drunk me is a clutz). The corner shattered but the rest of screen has minor cracking; definitely still usable. I don’t carry the “provider” insurance because i’ve had bad experiences with it in the past so I called a repair place and the quoted me $450 for a screen replacement! Directly from their email:

“Unfortunately due to widespread availability issues for replacement parts, high part costs, and repair complications we no longer offer service of the s7 edge”

The amount a particular type of insurance pays out is basically proportional to how much the insurance company expects to lose on a given claim and how many people it expects to make claims vs. the total premiums paid.

If you figure everyone who has a car is legally required to have car insurance, but most of those people aren’t going to make insurance claims each year, the relatively modest premiums provide plenty of funds to pay out the claims in a given year.

In 2015, the car insurance industry charged $192,782,498 in premiums and covered $145,149,866 in losses. That means they still had $47,632,632 left after covering those losses. So clearly they can afford to provide the coverage they do, and they don’t need to impose a bunch of restrictions on what they cover in order to stay in the black.

Phone insurance is a much thinner margin, because the premiums are lower, the claims are more frequent, and the payouts are larger in relation to the premiums. So they have to impose all these ways for them to pay less or nothing in order to break even on the total pool of premiums they’re collecting.

That’s what makes it feel more like a scam but really it’s just that car insurance is a scam that provides more benefit to the people being scammed.

Yup. I just recently dropped mine twice. Smashed opposite corners of the screen.... While I hate bulky cases, a small cases probably would have saved me in both cases on asphalt from pocket height. Phone still works fine and will keep working till the Note 8 comes out and I replace it.

I’ve been looking to pick one up but I run with Ting so I pay full price for my phones and don’t have the option of insurance. They’re about $250-300 on EBay and this is the biggest reason I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

I hardly drop my phone but I do a ton of car work and use my phone for pictures, one misplaced socket and I’d need a new phone. I might have to look into the HTC 10 more.

Hmmm. I’m going to have to look into this. My current homeowner’s policy has a 5% deductible (on the total value of the house), so I’m not sure it would do me much good unless there’s a small rider with a much, much smaller deductible.
