Alright, so in my last post I was spitballing some ideas for a Turo rental to head to the ski mountain in California next month. Lots of highway driving, want something comfortable.

Based on the comments, I have narrowed it down a bit and have come up with some options that would work best. I eliminated the Mercedes and BMW for being cheapo base models, the Audi for being a FWD CVT piece of garbage, and the Cadillac for being powered by a boat anchor.

I am stuck between a Chrysler 300 and an Infiniti Q40. Both have a nice 3.6 or 3.7 L V6 with RWD and decent interiors. While the Chrysler would be more comfortable overall, I do like the little bit of handling ability and smaller size the Infiniti would have. The Infiniti is also 400 pounds lighter and has more horsepower, so it should be decidedly quicker. The only concern with the Infiniti is whether or not the seats in the back fold down to fit skiis in there.

Theres also a manual GTI but it would cost about $100 more for the trip and my girlfriend thinks they look like mini vans. Thinking the Infiniti would be a good choice though.

Always wanted to drive a 300. But only in black. That car has to be black.

If I were between the two for me, I’d go with the 300 and regret it when it turned out to be terrible. Or, even worse, I ended up liking it.

That said, every time I look at Turo I end up with a traditional rental instead. Your mileage may vary but both Turo and my insurance company are pretty clear that my normal insurance won’t cover a Turo rental. After you add in their insurance, it makes more sense to go with a company like Sixt or Silver Car.

Are there any stipulations in these rentals, I sure as fuck don’t want people taking my car up to the mountains with snow, gravel and all that goes with ski areas. I rented a nice Flex and man that thing plowed through some shit without any trouble, I was impressed. Very comfortable barge too.

All of the options I have been looking at seem to be run by an agency of some sort, rather than someones private car. It will be like one person listing 4 or 5 different cars. So its like a small business running through Turo rather than just someone renting their extra car. Nothing stipulated against using the cars for whatever plus its going to be June so there wont be much winter stuff to drive through on any roads.

My problem with the traditional places is having no choice in vehicle. Plus after running pricing, even with the insurance its cheaper for these Turo options. I could get a Fusion or Camry or something like that for cheaper, but to get something nicer it would be a bit more and I would probably end up with the base model BMW/Merc crap that I dont want.

Ive used Turo a few times now. Ive been happy with the cars ive found. The Turo service itself is kinda crap but theres nothing else like it. The owners and cars have made it worth dealing with that stuff.

But think how much cooler you’d look in the 300. Infinitis are nerdy.

I’ve not driven the Q40 but it looks identical to my friend’s G37xS and that car is a HOOT to drive. Like damn it keeps pulling and can easily get you in trouble, seats are really comfortable in the G37x and it’s pretty insulated from road noise.

Any idea if the back seat folds down? The Q40 is just the new G37, same exact car. They just changed the name.

I asked him and he said he doesn’t think so. Not sure if that’s changed for Q40.

Rented a G37 many moons ago when I went to California on vacation. Base model, but did have that big VQ37 under the hood. Good power and a nice driving car. Did well dynamically going up the PCH.

I’ve also rented a Charger with the 3.6L and it’s a big car. You feel its size quite a bit, but I had a lot of fun with it - largely because it was gray with the basic five-spoke wheels and other drivers on the highway couldn’t have been more courteous when I came up behind them.

Don’t know if this has helped at all, but the Infiniti will be more fun to drive, but the 300 probably a bit more comfortable.

That would be perfect for skiis assuming, it’s not an option that could have been added and that instead it’s just standard.

True. Was just surprised that it’s not standard that all sedans have 60/40 folding seats these days...is that really not the case?

I’ve found through Google search that it’s often now an option that costs a few hundred dollars to have it. Some cars it’s also considered part of the car structure so folding it would make the chassis a little wobbly.

The 300 has the 60/40 folding split, so you won’t have any problem with luggage, plus the trunk is huge. 292-300 HP, they move out and are actually a lot of fun to drive if you have the S and not the base model.

Haven’t driven the Q40, but that could be a fun car as well, as long as you can fit everything.

Yeah I remember that being an option on E36 BMWs back in the day (my E30 is non folding and it is definitely a structural wall back there)…and pretty much thought it was standard at this point. Is there any option on Turo to communicate with the company/person renting a car to ask a question like this?

I just said YOLO and booked it and have asked them after the fact. Waiting to hear back about them physically checking the car for me. I did find a spec sheet that lists all of the things that are optional/standard on the Q40 model. It says the rear seat pass through is standard so I think I should be okay.
