Kinja'd!!!

I am going to take this Baldwin C630T home. A friend currently owns it, and it would be a good refurbish project (or MIDI-ify project). Best part? All it costs me is the time, fuel, and beer to get about 6 guys to go up and help move it to my house.

How heavy is that? I only ask because I have helped move an upright up a flight of stairs. And I had the bottom end (with one other guy). That’s probably why I have back troubles today.

Likely I’m going to need about 6-8 guys to move this thing (and not injure anyone). My initial guess would be able 480-500lbs including bench and pedalboard.

It definitely weighs less than an upright piano.

Get some carpeted dollies. Rent them if you have to. If you have porch stairs to deal with, and you rent a Uhaul, I’m pretty sure you can remove the metal ramp and use it to roll up the steps. Good luck.

That is SWEEEEET!!!!! Please make it MIDI-capable, that would be a great project.

Oh, you gotta add MIDI to it. GrandOrgue is good, and Miditzer is great fun if you’re into that sort of thing.

Looks great. Good luck moving it.

I did something similar in 2012. Bought a Rodgers 645 (or something), ripped out the stop rail and 10 speakers, and added a third manual and two swell shoes. I use it with Hauptwerk software on a PC and some gnarly audio equipment. Love it. The next step is to buy some wood core keyboards with thumb pistons.

Before and after shots.

Upright pianos are such a pain to move. We have one in our house and I just inherited another one from my mom.

I agree with ttyymmnn, carpeted dollies are fantastic, but you only need one. Put it in the center of the piano. We tried using two and almost dropped it when we transitioned to the ramp from the floor of the truck. The first dolly made the transition, but then it was a balancing game where the piano was partly on two different dollies. After we straightened out that fiasco, we discovered a single dolly works fine as long as you are really careful at the ramp transitions, both top and bottom.

This is in fact, The Plan(TM).

Hauptwerk is also part of The Plan(TM)

Dollies and a lift truck. Fortunately the pedalboard detaches.

I recommend New Haven piano carry dollies:

Because handles *and* wheels. Used a set of these to move a 600lb gun safe not too long ago.

I play mainly on a Rodgers 960D. I’m willing to give up a choir manual to have another instrument to practice with at home.

The plan is to see how much refurbish work needs to be done, and then decide if I do a full manual replacement or if I try to just wire up the existing manuals and pedalboard switches and go from there.

Hauptwerk. It’s the only way to be sure.

Haven’t used it because I’m cheap. I mean, when I finally get around to building a console (in 5-10 years at the rate I’m going with house projects) then I’d consider spending money.

If I was really cheap, I’d just ask for a key to the church and play that Rodgers as much as possible.

However, that pedalboard has some misaligned reed switches, so I have to bring my tools at some point to realign those.
