Trying to pick a Turo rental for an upcoming trip with my girlfriend. We are going to be trekking up to Lake Tahoe from the LA area via the direct boring route of the I-5. Since this will entail hours of highway bombing, I just want to do so in extreme comfort. For some perspective, I find my Miata to be a comfortable highway cruiser so my standards for comfort are low haha. Anyways, here are the options I am considering, all of which are around $50 a day, which is better than choosing the “luxury” option at the traditional rental places. Images are just googled crap so they might not be accurate model/trim levels. I really have no idea what any of these cars are like.

The only catch is that I need to fit a set of skis in the car somehow but its going to be June so I dont have to worry about inclimate weather. Whether that somehow fits in the back seat or a passthrough/fold down rear seat is fine since its just the two of us in the car. Theres also an Automatic FRS, A Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Infiniti Q40 are also about the same price but I figured those would not be as good of options.

Hmm there’s also a 2013 BMW 1 Series. That could be fun if skiis would fit!

lmao, you chose a AMG photo fort the ‘base’ C250.

id choose the merc or the audi. low end BMW interiors suck hard, and I’;ve yet to be in a new caddie, so i cant comment on it. the merc and audis are super super comfy though.

How many days and what’s the total milage round trip? Could get expensive. Turo is typically allowing 100 per day right?

*edit. Must be my area with the limits see yours have a bunch of unlimited so that’s cool!

Audi has a passthrough in the backseat designed specifically for skis.

I say do the ATS, I’ve heard the chassis is really nice but I’ve never bothered to drive one. Second choice is the Audi.

All of these options are unlimited mileage. That’s the only reason I’m not getting a manual or something really interesting. Going to end up being like 1100 miles by the end of the 4 day trip. There was a ‘15 wrx I really wanted but with 200 miles per day, it wouldn’t be enough.

Lol yeah I realized that after I posted. I was leaning towards the Mercedes as well but I know nothing about the Caddy or Audi. Makes sense for the BMW, they really have been going downhill.

I would think all of them have that sort of thing? I have them in a bag so it just needs to physically have enough space to fit the oblong package.

I was thinking the same thing. I certainly would like something that isn’t a total bore to drive. Would rather it be a coupe just because they look better but that’s a moot point.

Ok. In that case it depends on what you are going for. The 300 will be the most comfortable car listed, but if you aren’t going for out-and-out most comfortable it’s really up in the air. All of those cars are aviablabe in a variety or normal and sporty times with a number of wheels and tires, all of which can affect their highway ride. Still, if your basis is “more comfortable than a Miata”, you’ll be happy with anything but the FRS.

Miata with coilovers, loud exhaust, and aggressive tires lol. But yeah I don’t have access to my car anyways since it’s on the East coast. I was worried of the 300 being kinda junky since I’m always afraid of Chrysler products. Does it really stand up to the comfort/luxury of a Mercedes or Audi?

The Charger or 300 will be the most comfortable by a good margin... Next would probably be a toss up between the Q40 and ATS.

Really? I didnt think that FCA stuff would be any good in that department. I do care slightly about the car being completely numb and boring. Thats why I was thinking the ATS might be a good choice. Obviously I cant expect excellent handling out of any of these but I just like to not hate driving it lol.

Depends on the engine in each. The C250 is a dog as is the ATS with the 2.5L. But if the ATS has the 2.0L turbo or 3.6L V6, it’ll run out nicely. The 2.0L turbo in the 328i is a good engine, but as others have said, base BMWs have lousy interiors. The A4 would be a nice option too.

If your biggest desire is something to soak up miles, my vote would be the 300. It’s big, comfy and the 3.6L Pentastar is a pretty good engine to move all that car around.

If you want something to flog around curvy mountain roads a bit and the ATS has the 2.0L turbo, that would be a fun option as it has a great chassis. Ditto the 328i, though to a slightly lesser degree.

The 300 probably won’t be too junky for a trip of this type so long as it hasn’t been ragged on by the PO. And yeah, I think it would be a more comfortable highway cruiser than a base-model C250 or the like, particularly if any of them were sport-package cars.

Good to note, I dont want something with no power. I think all of these are base models basically. Good call on the 3.6L, I could imagine that being far better. I am thinking the Audi would have a nicer chassis perhaps so those would two to compare more closely.

The thing is that not all Chrysler products are the same... The 300 and Charger ride on the LX chassis, which is derived from an older E-class and S-class. They have decent handling for mountains, ride really well on highways, they’re RWD (the last non-luxury full-size cars made by a domestic brand that are), etc. They’re also huge, so the skis should fit with ease. While Chrysler’s homegrown stuff is awful, these cars are the last remnants of when Daimler-Benz and Chrysler merged, and the only truly good thing to come from that merger. The interiors are not amazing, but they’re very comfortable and therefore these have been my go-to cars for long-distance highway drives for over a decade now.

There is a guy on a MB forum I visit that has an ATS as a daily driver and says the ATS for him is very similar in chassis feel to his old E46 3 series. Not sure how true it is but it sounds like a good endorsement.

Can confirm the comfort. I often describe my Magnum as feeling like a leather sofa going down the highway. I’ve moved halfway across the country several times with it and never felt worn out or tired from it. And while not an agile vehicle, they do have pretty composed handling when things get twisty.

Ahh yes, it is on the LX chassis that is important to note. Older E and S class is definitely the sort of comfort I am looking for anyways. And for the same price as the others, it makes sense to go with that then. I still want to compare it to the ATS and Audi A4 since I do care about it being a little driver focused but I can certainly eliminate the others.

I do worry about it being the base engine versus one of the better ones though. I feel like that would make or break the experience.

What’s the base engine? I think the 2.0T is the one most people like and the 3.6 V6 is the one most didn’t.

Agreed, I am definitely down to considering the 300, ATS, and A4. I think 300 would be the best overall.
