I had just left the office, and had only gone 6 blocks or so. I hadn’t done anything remotely stupid (yet).

Officers come to my window, one on each side (Chicago PD). They ask for license and registration, then he asks me if I realize that my plates have been expired. For a year.

WAT? So I ask if the sticker fell off, he says no, the Sec State shows it expired, too.

Doh.

So they wrote me a ticket. Apparently I just need to comply, no court or anything.

tl;dr - cops were nice, I’m a dummy.

A cop on each side? What an inefficient use of resources.

(Chicago PD)

In most cases yes. In this case... Perfectly reasonable.

It’s Chicago.

For their own protection, I’m sure.

It’s been years since I’ve been pulled over, but I don’t recall there ever being 2 cops in the car before.

Done it! A cop on each side? Did they do the repeater?

Plates expire? NJ isn’t all flowers and sunshine, but we only have to do license every 4 years, and registration every year. Even inspection is only every other year for older cars, and every few years for new cars (depends on the car). They don’t even check for anything other than CEL codes or if it’s been cleared within 150 miles...

Do a ride-along in a sector car in a sketchy neighborhood on a midnight shift. You’ll change your tune.

D’oh indeed for letting a car go unregistered for a year.

I would say perfectly fine there. However when police did it to me in my hometown of less than 3000 I would call it inefficient, especially when two more showed up shortly after. This was just for speeding a little bit around midnight.

More embarrassing than driving an unregistered car for the last year is the fact that I’ve never seen that movie. Sounds like I need to fix that...

I wasn’t very clear - it was the registration sticker that was expired. Illinois only re-plates every 8-10 years or so. They’re just doing it again now. No statewide inspection, either. In the Chicago and St. Louis areas, they do emissions testing on cars over 4 model years old (but newer than ‘96, I think) - which just consists of an OBD scan on my 2000 and 2005 MY cars, every other year.

Yeah, I’m an idiot, that’s for sure. My only defense is that I have 2 other cars that I’ve owned for 17 and 11 years each, and for both of those, I get email reminders well in advance of expiration. For those, I always renew well in advance (one is in March, other is June). This car is new, and I’ve never gotten an email reminder, because it’s never been renewed. On top of that, for a while, Illinois stopped mailing reminders, to save $, because they’re broke. So I never got *any* reminder for this car. Still, you’d think I would notice at some point over the last 12 months...

This. And once you realize that the officers in your scenario need to have a partner, it’s best to make it a consistent policy across the board. I was in a nice area, during twilight hours, but still.
