Tripping across the web, I found a mustang spec’d pretty much how I’d like it in the colors (Ecoboost premium, blue outside with brown interior) I’d like for a price I’d be willing to pay. There’s just one problem. It’s a year old, but has 55K miles on it.

55K. In a year.

In my mind, that’s a good chunk of its operational life beaten out of it by who knows how many business travelers who checked the “sporty” box on the Hertz website. What say you, Oppo? Would this put you off, or do you think there is lots of good life left in this ol’ gal to justify the price?

Noooope. Those turbos are not long for this world. Especially that used with more than likely little maintenance.

CP, they’d need to knock another $2-5k off the asking price for it to be worth it. It is a fleet car, high mileage, and questionable usage and it’s being offered at the market price for the same car with half the miles.

I wouldn’t, that car has probably over 125k miles of wear over just 55k miles.

People -- on here, even! -- freely admit they drive rental cars like they stole it. Now take what someone will do to a poor Hyundai Accent... and put that same person in a Mustang .

No, you if you’re looking for a high-mileage discount you should be able to find a CPO around that price. Not the right color combos, but there is dealer near me with 2 Ecoboost premiums - a white one with 44k for $23k and a yellow/black for $23,600 with 32k. At least with the CPO you get a decent warranty with that higher-mileage.

First car my wife and I ever bought was a 96 Dodge Stratus that had been rented out by Hertz. I think it was in the 40k miles area. Certainly no turbo Mustang, but we got many years out of it before my wife pulled out in front of a city bus (she was fine). I know a lot of people poo-poo program cars here, but we did just fine. But, I doubt anybody thrashed a 96 Stratus like they would a Mustang.

No way. The argument for rentals is that they get “fleet maintenance.”

As the rental company only makes money when it is rented out, the goal is to keep it on the lot or being driven as much as possible. Rentals are often not treated with... the utmost respect, to put it nicely. Previous rental = auto CP.

Especially not a mustang or other “sporty” car. Any rental car has seen some abuse, those beg you to abuse them.

And you know that not just as a rental, but as a MUSTANG (or any other sports car really) rental, at least half of those miles were spent with the skinny pedal buried into the floor.

I think if I could get my hands on it, I might be able to make that determination too. But, with Carmax, I’d have to pay $600 just to transfer it here and see it in person. And, I’d be out that money if I didn’t buy it.

Is the turbo thing really an issue anymore? I thought that worry had been put to rest for the Ecoboost line after all those miles in trucks. Or have they turned out to not be reliable enough?

Turbos are just an extra thing to fail and are expensive when they do. If you’re prepared for it and maintain your vehicle that will be later in the cars life and it won’t be a big deal. This car has lived quite the life already. I do know at least 2 FoST that have lost turbos though,

People like me put that 55k on that car.

So, no I wouldn’t buy it.

Also, it’s been a million years, but I worked for a rental agency back in college. We didn’t do much maintenance - oil change intervals were 8-10k when 3k was the norm. Might be better now, but maybe not.

On the plus side, it’s the fastest car in the world.

They are fine. There are FiSTs with over 150k miles on factory turbo, and all of those have been thoroughly abused. The fact is, it’s the same turbo tech that has been running in diesel trucks for years, and you don’t see them swapping back to NA for reliability reasons. There is no extra maintenance, either.

That said, stay away from a rental.

I’d struggle a bit with any turbo car sitting at 55k in a year, regardless of how it got there, personally.

I’m sure it just takes a little patience though. They built lots of Mustangs.

Kinda what I figured. Anything that isn’t a shade of gray is a little harder to come by. Even so, I’d either decide I had to have the blue/brown and get MaxCare with it for a little extra cost or hold out until something CPO popped up. I don’t think I’d buy that one without a warranty. Too much uncertainty. Look at the posts of the they Boostang owners here - these have had some teething problems, especially the 2015's. (I see the Carmax one is a 2016, but I’d still do a warranty. )

Depends on the miles. The warranty is 3/36k basic and 5/60k on the powertrain. Some of these are pretty close to eating that up in mileage, so I guess it depends how much you plan to put on it.

No don’t buy a rental boostang.
