Is this paint protection film?

Kinja'd!!!

I took my mom’s Miata home, partially because I told her I would get tires and an oil change for her, partially because my Jag was making a belt-ish noise when it was being put into reverse, and partially because the weather is nice.

Since I left work early, I decided I would clean it as well. The compounding worked great, and it’s looking fiiiiiine, but that had the effect of making the cracks in the clearcoat look all the more obvious. Then I looked really close and noticed it’s kid of a plastic film. Now, I drive an early 00s Jag, so I consider myself to be an expert on shitty clearcoat, but I’ve never seen it come up like a thin plastic film. Is that the paint protection thing people put on cars? Because if it is, it sure as hell didn’t do much to protect from pitting. It also looks like it’s only on the plastic bits, and not on metal bits like the hood.

Also, this thing from Meguiars:

This thing works like gangbusters, considering it was 1) 30 bucks and 2) hooked up to baby’s first cordless drill.

Also, does anyone have any idea how to restore black trim on the interior of these things? It’s faded and a little white. I read online that Mothers black trim restorer works, but I tried that and it helped in some places, but not the areas around the switches.

Your mother drives a Miata? That’s pretty sweet.

That’s just straight up clear coat.

That’s clearcoat. It’s common for peeling clearcoat to peel like a film. :( If you’re a cheapskate like me you can “fix” it by filling each area with a few dots of super glue.

It won’t look 100%, but in my experience it seems to halt the advance of clearcoat peeling in the particular area.

When I was a kid, “her car” was an AW11 MR2. She likes little sports cars.

Sadly, it’s an automatic, but she has the best possible excuse for having an automatic Miata, considering that she’s 68 and tore her right rotator cuff and can’t drive a stick anymore.

She gets her Jalop cred though. She forced me to learn to drive on a manual because “what are you going to do if you’re in an emergency where you have to drive a real car?”

Man, I thought the clearcoat on my Jag sucked. Mazda took this British roadster thing a bit too literally.

I can’t believe how well it works on a drill that tops out at something like 2,500 RPM on high.

You haven’t seen ‘nuthin yet! My Kia had that clear coat issue. But, it was like a $1k car so I wasn’t invested in actually fixing it. A few dots of krazy glue here and there and never had to worry about it again.

The worst offenders I’ve seen so far are smarts. For whatever reason, the 2009 “rally red” colour has clear coat that comes off in literal sheets.

It appears it’s been resprayed and it’s chipped and peeling.

When machine polishing use the lowest speed for final finish with glaze to reduce swirls.

That wouldn’t surprise me. My brother, who is a psychotic Miata fan in the worst way, convinced my mom that this car was a steal, but I don’t think it was particularly well-loved, even if she got it for around $5k.

No this typical for Miatas, especially for classic red Miatas. They tend to fade to a flat, pinkish hue after the clear coat gives up the ghost. Early NAs tend to suffer from this the most as they age but I’m starting to see neglected NB1s look the same.

I see Mazda must have taken clear coat application lessons from Ford, my Mustang’s bumper started doing the same thing right before I traded it.
