2 or 4 wheels? A dilemma

Kinja'd!!!

So I bought my “new” bike and have been riding it around when the weather cooperates. And I’m now second-guessing the whole “owning a motorcycle “ thing.

It is often too cold, or too hot, or wet for riding to be comfortable enough to actually be enjoyable, instead of a chore. My partner (who is only around on weekends) doesn’t ride and doesn’t want to ride on the back of my bike, so my choices are to spend time away from them riding, or only ride during the week(which mostly means commuting on the bike.

For less than what I paid for the bike (during the winter, so getting my $$ back out shouldn’t be an issue) I could own something like the Mercedes I posted about. I already have a ‘64 chevy pickup I’m re-doing, but a car-type classic is better for long trips and being social with friends.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Pros for bike:

Already own it

Fuel injected & shaft drive mean low maintenance for my toy.

Cheap to insure/register

In the right place and/or weather it is a ton of fun.

Negatives for bike:

Pretty much a solo activity (even when riding with someone)

Need to watch weather to avoid getting caught out and being miserable.

Completely unusable for a chunk of the year.

Absolutely needs to be stored in the garage

Pros for classic sedan/coupe/convertible:

Room for partner & friends means I can drive it and still be social

Short of snow/sleet, weather is irrelevant to using it

No added gearing up/prep time to take it to work or out

Can be stored outdoors

Negatives for classic sedan/coupe/convertible:

Higher insurance/registration costs.

Takes up more of my limited driveway/garage space

Much higher maintenance costs & time

Would be a third 4-wheeled vehicle and duplicates things I already own (classic vehicle, vehicle with room for 4+ people) just in a different form.

Thoughts?

Having a modern daily, a classic pickup that needs a complete restoration, another classic that will need maintenance, and a motorcycle is a bit excessive, even for me. Two “toys” is about the max I want right now. Plus I have a cramped driveway & garage, so space is at a bit of a premium.

I think it boils down to how much time you want to spend with your significant other. If you want to involve them in the “motoring experience” get the car, if you want to have your me time, then bike.

I enjoy riding with my fiancee, get the fun of having her along with me with only a slight handling penalty

Pretty much a solo activity (even when riding with someone) is a pro, not a negative.

Not for me.

This is fair haha.

I mean it seems like a big turn-off for you with the motorcycle is the social aspect because a motorcycle is inherently a solitary activity. To me a big part of that decision then would depend on if my partner or a network of friends would be interested in enjoying the classic car with me. If they are, that would give a lot of points to the car. If not, eh I’d be driving the car alone anyway

A lot would also depend on how fun your daily is, like if I had a fun daily and a classic car to scratch the wrenching/fiddling itch a motorcycle would add more than another project. If I had a boring daily and a project that isn’t drivable, I could totally see the argument for a fun classic that doesn’t need much(just remember any classic will be work) to drive around when I just want something more fun, even if it’s raining.

I did this same thing a few years back, but with a Kawasaki Vulcan and a Corvette. I liked owning the bike, but I didn’t enjoy riding it as much as I enjoy driving. Also, it’s Rhode Island, so the bike was frequently unuseable because of our weather.

Personally, I’d go car. I like when other people can participate in my hobby, specifically my wife and son.

She thinks the truck is cool, and even has had fun driving it. She is fine with taking it for local trips, but (understandably) finds it too loud, uncomfortable, slow, etc. for longer trips. This is fair as that is an accurate description of a worn out 60 year old pickup.

Your problem is weather not the bike. Get some gear and get out there.

Bundling up in a ton of gear so I can ride a bike in shitty weather without being frozen/wet/whatever doesn’t make riding a bike in shitty weather actually fun for me.

See you look at the lack of you regular partner on the back as a negative. I see it as a chance to make a new....”Friend”.

All I’m saying is an open pillion means a chance to meet someone new.

You know, it never occurred to me that the main reason I should own a motorcycle is that it will make cheating easier.

I mean now that you mention it, Instead of thinking about how to spend more time with the person I care most about, love the most, and really enjoy sex with; I should definitely prioritize the vehicle that might help me meet some stranger I can fuck behind my partners back.

Jesus Christ, I hope you’re single, so no one else has to deal with your philandering bullshit.

i’m with Manny, your issue is gear/weather

at the end of the day, your choice. but riding is my chance to GTFO from everyone else, not spend MORE time with ppl.

and again, bikes are so much cheaper to buy/store and take care of. as for gear, a good ADV jacket/pants and thats really all you need.
