When it’s multimillionaires flying through traffic in sticker covered Ferraris and Porches, they’re arrogant rich assholes who think they own the road and have the right to endanger other people for the sake of having fun. But when it’s a bunch of average Joes careening around in junkyard bait that is as much of a threat to public safety at 50mph as a Lamborghini is at twice that speed, it’s just some guys being true gear heads and having a great time.

I’m just going to say it: I don’t care for David. He sounds like a nice guy, but his behavior irritates the hell out of me. That’s all.

Safe Rally participants = not douches.

Not safe Rally participants = douches.

Money is irrelevant save for how much justice it buys them after the fact.

Yeah, the rally is certainly not on him. But he seems to not care/not give a shit about the potential danger that his ideas pose to the public.

Which is funny because he has written:

Let me begin by saying that I thank the heavens everyday that Michigan doesn’t have a safety inspection, otherwise my Beloved But Totally Junky 1948 Willys CJ-2A (which I’m currently repairing ) would be in a junkyard. Or the EPA’s equivalent of a CIA black site, tucked away where it can never do harm to anyone.

Still, if I set my personal preferences aside, I think a really basic safety inspection—consisting of only a couple of checks!—should be a requirement across America. It’s the right thing to do.

All of those cars in the rally would have failed a safety inspection, but yay Michigan!

What is with this attitude? There’s nothing wrong with either of those scenarios. The Lambo one, sure, they’re pretty much rich douches, but let them have their fun. As for taking a bunch of jalopies on the road and having fun with them...what about this exactly irritates you? That is the definition of fun and one of the simple pleasures in life.

This is the same “think about the children!” attitude that got Jalopnik to become the PC, safety first, “cars are deadly weapons”, “fun is bad kids, keep it on the track days no one can afford” safety-fetishist circle jerking fiasco.

If you care about safety that much, then fine good for you. Apparently most people agree with you because they all drive huge crossovers as singles and think after one child is born, they MUST get that big 7 seat SUV. But no that’s not enough, you have to then shame people for having the fun that you’re not having.

Motto for oppo should be: Don’t forget to buckle up! And stay below the speed limit folks! Oh and Oppositelock doesn’t mean controlled oversteer fun...actually we completely forgot what that means but it sounds cool so we just keep the name!

There isn’t one car in that article I find remotely interesting and that whole event sounds like my idea of hell.

Don’t forget to buckle up!

Well I mean, that’s pretty much an objectively good thing to do. :P

As for the scenarios. It’s happened so many times where rich Lambo guy decides to race other rich Lambo guy, spins out of control, and takes out cars that weren’t even part of the rally. That’s totally not and never cool.

Not saying they shouldn’t have the rally, just street racing, variable conditions, and poor driver skill don’t mix.

As for the jalopy rally thing, most of it was offroad and the on-road bits looked pretty slow save for the grade crossing jump. It’s definitely worthy of a pass. The sketchiest things about that one have to be David towing a dead Jeep that can’t stop down the expressway at highway speed using a Jeep that also doesn’t work. See also: Roadmaster fuel tank on the roof.

But, we’re all human, we all have done human things like that before. I mean heck, as a teenager I tried to set point to point speed records.

Yea that irritates me a bit. As well as the fact that most of those shitboxes would not have passed any sort of safety inspection, and yet I was forced to get rid of my beloved e30 due to a rust hole in PA.

I’ve been in both types of car rallies, and both are too fun, if not similarly viewed as negative in the public eye.

Are you saying there’s a societal double standard where rich people are treated differently than the poors? NO WAY!

This is more of a reminder that people will literally find anything to piss and moan about.

Poor or rich, if you are a threat to public safety I have no sympathy and you get what’s coming to you. While I do like the idea of these sorts of rally events, I do believe that greater care should be taken.

Not any more than my original post suggested that of rich people. My point was not that we hold rich people to a higher standard and therefore should expect more of them (i.e. no rallying shenanigans) than poorer folks, but rather that if we’re gonna get mad at rich people for doing it, we should hold that same standard for everyone, otherwise it just comes across as bitter envy.

My point in saying “it goes both ways” was to say that there are some things the poor or middle-class do, like substance abuse for example, that is taken much more seriously and looked at much more negatively than a rich socialite with a cocaine addiction.

I think you’re putting way too much energy into this. Who gives a shit? Your complaining about people not complaining enough. Millionaires don’t need you defending them. They pay lawyers good money for that (and they’re a lot better at it).
